Are there any differences between the 390 and 390 Interceptor I'm wanting to build one for my 70 F-100 but wanted to make sure before I started into the build.
I was going for a build-up of the Interceptor out of a mid-late 60s Galaxie police cruser. Am I going in the right direction? Just wanted to build a police spec engine.
you can do it...It would be better than a standard 390 thats for sure. The intake is alot better and the cam is 440/440 lift as opposed to 401/401. But the police 428 is 499/499 which is better...I would go with my own style cam from crane that was similar but with a modern grind.... I would also up the CR ratio with 360 CR height pistons...that and a 600-650 holley will make for a very peppy motor.
The 1962 thru 1965 390 PI was rated at 330 hp @ 5000rpm and 427 lb/ft torque @ 3200 rpms and the 428 took over in 1966 with a 360 hp @ 5400 and 459 lb/ft @ 3200 rpms. The 390 PI ran 10.5 to 1 compression a mechanical cam and stiffer valves springs. The cam was a 282 deg duration with .440" lift at the valve and 54 degrees of overlap. Part number C3AZ-6250-T. The 428 ran 10.5 compression and the cam was more radical at 306 duration, .500" lift and 78 degrees of overlap. The 428 cam was C3AZ-6250-D in 1966 and in '67 they wnt to the same came as the 390 GT and the standard CJ used. A 270/290 degree cam with .481/.490" lift and 46 degrees of overlap. Part C6OZ-6250-B. Both cam numbers are service part numbers.
It would be a definite improvement over and above your stock engine big time..The Cop cars those engines were in weent light weight..with all the wquipment they had to tote around also!!
I would think your F100 is somewhere around 4000lbs which is probably right at what the Cruiser's weighed of that day maybe more...Like what was mentioned above..I would do a Cam change, Carb, and a set of headers....and be good to go!! and if you feel you need a little more out of the hole..run some lower gears in the rearend !! JMO!
All the Ford dist. have the same guts. If nothing else hit a wrecking yard and get a junk dist. for parts. Oh yeah, I agree with Russ, the cars these engines came out of were big, better than 3000 lbs always and some pushed 4000 lbs.
