So, I just bought a 2012 F250 4X4 with 40,000 miles on it. I take delivery next Saturday. It is a Certified Ford Pre Owned vehicle, so it comes with a 12 month - 12,000 mile complete warranty, plus I'll get the remainder of the 7 year - 100,000 mile powertrain warranty from Ford.
The dealer wants to sell me an extended warranty for 2500 dollars that would add an additional 2 years - 25,000 miles, which would cover me through 2021.
I did do a search here on "extended warranty" without finding any threads.
I've never bought an extended warranty before, but then again, I've never spent this kind of money on a vehicle before either - $32,500, and it makes me a bit nervous.
(In the past, I've been buying ex police cars and other government vehicles at government auctions for a few grand, driving them for two or three years, then junking them and picking up another one.)
I like the fact that the warranties will be honored at any Ford dealership in the US or Canada, as I've just retired and will be using the truck to travel around the country.

it is a ripoff. the extended warranty only covers certain things, and what it does cover has a high deductible.
example: a window motor costs $56, and $121 for labor to install it. but under the extended warranty you pay $200 for the repair. so you pay $2500 for a warranty, then get to pay $200 for a $177 job.
Read the wording on the warranty carefully. As previous poster said, they will try to get out of coverage any way they can. If you are going with the warranty, make it is backed by Ford and not a third party. Also, make sure it is transferrable upon sale. If it isn't, then go back to warranty company for pro-rated refund if you sell vehicle before expiration date/miles.
No offense against the dealer, but they are trying to pad their profits. There isn't any reason to buy this when there is another three years on the Ford warranty. You can do the exact same thing by saving the money you'd be sending them, if you think about it, and no deductible. Then when the Ford warranty is out you'd have a nice chunk of change saved up for any problems.
Pass on that one. The exisiting warranty will be enough--you will know if it's keep or sell before they run out.
I did make money on a couple of Ford ESP warranties, but they were far less than the price you quote. I am not going to make money on my current brand x extended warranty, although I did get a new radio out of it recently.
Is the extended warranty a dealer warranty or a proper Ford ESP? If it's a dealer warranty, you can get service anywhere in the country buy the selling dealer must be contacted for authorization.
The certified preowned will get you another 60K miles of powertrain coverage.
I just used the "easycare" warranty on my 2012 hyundai last week for a failed alternator that broke the mount bracket also. I paid $600 for the warranty and it's paid for itself in this instance as the total for parts + labor was over $1000. That being said, I did have to come out of pocket $100 for the deductible and another $100 for the diagnostic.
You should see how those Hyundais and Kias are crammed in there- It's upwards of six hours to change an alternator in some, and it can be a high skill job too.
I have seen a few different warranty plans, some are actually halfway decent. One customer brought in a Sentra they had just bought, and left with a new transmission after paying a $200 deductible. However, I have also had a few people come in and wind up saving about $20 on a repair after spending a lot on a warranty. Having the existing manufacturer's warranty on there, I would just run that for now, and when it's about six months to a year from expiring look into an independent warranty.

I'm guessing what you mean is an "extended warranty", on a (used) Sentra, but after the manufacturers warranty has passed.
There should be no reason to buy an "extended warranty" on anything still covered by the manufacturer warranty. I realize these guys need to make their boat payments, though not from me.

It's a gamble like car insurance. One major repair can easily make the extended warranty pay for itself or the car can be trouble free and you lose.
So what you are saying is the manufacturers warranty will not be honored and/or is no good so we have to "gamble" and pay extra?
Or are you talking about after the warranty, five years later? Apples and aircraft carriers.
Aren't we talking about extended warranties? I'm talking about coverage that extends the manufacturers coverage. Factory warranty normally ends at 3/36 Bumper to Bumper and 60 months 60,000 miles for the power train.

I don't normally purchase extended warranties but I don't think they are a bad idea if one can get a high quality one from ford or a reputable aftermarket.
