Gen or Alt?

I can't find this gauge. What's a suitable replacement?

Here's a voltage gauge that looks stock (I prefer voltage gauges)

And here is a stock type amp gauge.

Alternator Gauge - Toms Bronco Parts

I might have a good Gen gauge in my stash. Give me the rest of day to check. Got a small project I'm finishing up right now.

It's hard to compare the two because they are completely different. They both deal with electricity but that's about all they have in common. For someone that doesn't live by the gauges, a voltmeter is better. If it read below 13 ish volts, you have problems. If you have an amp gauge and your gen/alt dies, the gauge might only move a needle width if you don't have much draw.

If you have a battery with a dead cell, the voltmeter will read 10 instead of 12 with the engine stopped. With an amp gauge, it will just show that it is always charging hard with the engine running.

If the field coil in your alternator goes bad, the amp gauge will show that it is charging. The voltmeter will show that it is only putting out a fraction of what it is supposed to.

The voltmeter is basically a dummy gauge whereas an ammeter takes a little thinking on our part to figure out just what the reading means.

Also, it seems that many of today's new electronic regulators like to flutter the amp gauge more at idle than even the old point type did.

If this style of ammeter goes bad, your truck won't charge as all of the electricity for most everything except your starter flows through it. If your voltmeter goes bad, nothing else is affected.

Very good info on the differences between ammeter and voltmeter. One reason to prefer a voltmeter that sticks in my mind, an ammeter needs relatively thick, heavy wiring all the way up into the dash, and because of the current carried have been known to start fires.

Both the Gen & Alt gauges in the 60s trucks, have the 'hoop ring' in the back that a wire goes through.
Sorry, I've heard the fire story before, but I've never known anyone that it actually happened to. I would think that with thousands of these trucks that were made, if there was a real problem, Ford would have changed the design. Not to say that it never happened to someone, but with all those 50 year old wires, anything is possible.

I was looking through some boxes on my shelves, in one box was an old cluster with all four gauges. It had the GEN Gauge on it with hoop. So now my other gauge set up is complete. Now I'll tear it apart and probably chrome the bezel and check all the gauges.
Thank you everyone for all your help, especially those who offered one.
You guys are the best.
