Steering Slop

My 95 F250 4x4 5.8L Manual Has some play in the steering wheel, tie rods, drag link & Pitman are all ok, I noticed that the steering column, where it goes into the gear box will spin about 3/8" - 1/2" before the tires start to wiggle. so is the box shot?

Check your rag joint at the lower end of your steering column. Thers should be a plastic cover over it that snaps off. If all is good there, then i would suspect a worn gear box.

Steering Slop

Also the intermediate steering shaft is telescoping and where the two pieces slide together is a common area to have play. I drilled a hole through mine and put a bolt in it, but it defeats the purpose of a telescoping shaft in the case of a bad accident. Helps tighten the play up though.

I checked the intermediate shaft and it's tight where they come together, As for the rag joint I don't see one, unless it's under the cover where the shaft goes into the gear box??. I did notice under the dash board that the shaft has some slop and I'm wondering if this is the problem. I'm wondering if I should try to tighten that pinch bolt some more or not? I made a short 35 second video on you tube.

Yes, the rag joint is under the black plastic cover. Tightening that pinch bolt under the dash might help. Let us know what you find out.
