I'm planning out my "build" of my 02" Excursion, and was looking for opinions on exhaust. I had MBRP 4" turbo back on my truck, and it had some drone, and fitment wasn't the best, but wasn't horrible. I'm hoping for something drone free. So question is MBRP, or Banks. Banks is a little more expensive, but I've heard good things about sound and fitment. Just looking for opinions from people that may have had either on an Excursion.
The rest of my plans are:
ATS turbo housing (kept off truck)
Riff Raff billet wheel for ported housing (kept off truck)
Riff Raff FRx
6637 filter
I have the Banks 4" Monster w/ high flow outlet system. It's a bit louder around town than I'd like, but I drive aggressively. On the highway it's great- no drone and not obnoxious at all. Fit and finish is excellent.
I have the Banks 4" & it is good imho but if I had to do it again I would not cut up a good exhaust system to gain 1/2". I'd just cut out the muffler & put a Walker BTM in the stock exhaust & spend the $$ elsewhere.
It's not the 1/2" of the straight sections of pipe that get the gains- the stock exhaust is bent so that those curved sections are about half of the original diameter!
I was amazed when i took my stock stuff off- the bends are really restrictive. It's a wonder the run as good as they do. The Banks is mandrel bent, so it is a true 4" throughout and you can see right thru the muffler. Good stuff.
Wrap the exhaust and be done with drone. I tried a resonator and it did great things toward being civil in a residential section - quiet EBPV at warm-up and all. The downside? Sometimes whistle out the back hitches a ride with the drone on the way out of town. I bought exhaust wrap to install when I have time. The resonator? It's this sooty thing in the garage that I may try to sell on craigslist.
I have a SS Magnaflow 4" system and it sounds very good, nice tone. No drone and quiet. Wind noise off of the mirrors is louder than my exhaust - or engine for that matter. If you want a lot of noise this is not for you. I only need to turn the volume on my radio to about 15 - 20%. Talk in normal tone no problemo.
Thanks for the replies. I also considered Magnaflow, I will look closer at that kit. I don't want loud, but a nice tone, and I sure do like the whistle out the tail pipe, so I don't want to loose that.

I'll see if I can take a video of my tailpipe whistle for you today. I should have one on hand anyways
