The closest thing to a 9-inch rear end is a Ford 9-3/8" rear end. However, there are only a few parts from a 9-3/8" 3rd member that are compatible with a 9-inch 3rd member but, I'm not certain if a 9-3/8" TL differential is compatible with a 9-inch 3rd member (?).

I do know you can put a 9-inch 3rd member in a 9-3/8" rear end housing but, you cannot put a 9-3/8" 3rd member into a 9-inch housing --at least not without notching the flange to clearance for the larger ring gear.

Ring gear clearance notches in the flange of a 9-3/8" rear end housing.

The 9-3/8" rear end is a stout rear end. The main problem with them is that there's no Ford or aftermarket support in the way of replacement parts for the gears. If a 9-3/8" ring and pinion gear set wears out, breaks a tooth, whatever, that's the end of it unless you are lucky enough to find an NOS set of gears. The aftermarket does not produce them for this rear end.

The '68-'72 F100 9-3/8" 31-spline axles, however, are a direct swap into a Bumpside 9-inch rear end housing and there's tons of support, in the way of parts, for a 9-inch rear.

Thanks and I'm glad if the information I've presented might help you get the parts you're looking for, without throwing money away on something you might not need or can't use.

...perhaps if I had been more dedicated in my school work back in my school days, as I am with old Mustangs and Ford trucks, I might have been a straight A student.

Ultra, what do you do in real life, I mean to earn your daily bread? Are you able to monetize your knowledge of rear ends? We have a guy in the Bay Area who is reputedly the best in the state. He lives very well.
We are all curious, methinks.
Thanks.

I'm not a real doctor but, I play one on T.V.

.....actually, for most of my professional working life, I've been in the electrical/mechanical maintenance field. For a number of years in between that, I worked for an independent lab testing high explosives and weapons systems for the military.

I don't remember any cement trucks being blown up but, this is a video for Hewlett Packard that was shot at the NTS facility I worked at, out in The Area in East Camden, Arkansas.

The (10) 3/8"-24 studs sticking out the front of the housing are splined. You could knock the stud in but, everytime you knock it back into place, the splines would cut more grooves in the hole until eventually there wouldn't be any material left to grip the stud and, chances would be greater that gear oil would begin to leak from around the stud.
