Hello all, can someone point me in the right direction if a post was already made on DIY for the engine control module (ECM).
I have a 2004 XLT 5.4l with a engine light on for O2 sensors. after replacing the O2 sensors the light remained on and couldnt figure out what the problem was. Took it down to a ford dealer to have them look at it. after they inspected the vehicle for several hours i was told i had a faulty ECM by one guy and i had a faulty PCM by another. I am not sure if they are the same thing. They told me they didn't carry the part anymore because its an obsolete part. they also said it wasnt important and that i didnt need to replace it. they did give me the part number and told me to find the part online and come back for the installation. before i order the part though i want to see if its easy to replace myself. any advice would be much appreciated fellow Ex brothers and sisters
ECM and PCM are interchangeable terminology, it's the control module for your engine/powertrain (hence Ecm or Pcm).
Have you had the code cleared and it returns, or will it just not clear at all? For over $600 I personally would be highly tempted to just deal with it, it get either Torque Pro or a ScanGauge - both of which allow you to read and clear codes as well as monitor other engine parameters and help diagnose future issues. Also, neither one is even remotely close to $600+. My CEL comes on all every key cycle, but I need a delete pigtail for the EBPV which is out of stock. But I digress...
If you're set on changing the computer out, try giving Custom Auto's By Tim a call and see if they have one in stock. The may need your existing computer code to ensure you get a proper replacement, I don't know how you gassed guys work regarding that. I'm not affiliated with them, however I have had great luck sourcing obscure parts from them at fair prices.
yes i have cleared the code and it keeps returning. thats when i tried having the dealership look at it. they seem to be having a hard time with it and when i told them i had to go after about 4 hours they gave me the diagnosis the Pcm/Ecm was bad.
thanks for the advice. the torque pro looks really nice. i may have to invest in that.
They are guessing. Try a good independent shop. They often have techs that actually have to diagnose for a living. Ford dealers are getting too many parts changers.
im actually glad you said that. when i took it to ford, i had one engine code showing which was 0059. when i just went out to go retrieve that code the scanner now shows 5 codes. 2195, 0053, 0059, 0135, and 0155. is it possible that something could of happened during the diagnostic that would cause more engine codes to pop up?
