I just completed my first camping trip with my SWB TC cargo van. The van is perfect as far as size; had my rolled up mattress, camping equipment, and fishing gear. Having doors on both sides and the back made things really easy in terms of organization and using the space.
The only draw back is that I was going from 110 degrees to a place that got down to 40 degrees at night and I didn't have a lot of cool weather gear. About froze my off. I've been thinking about insulating the van, but it will be easier to just bring along warmer clothes and blankets when heading for the hills.
I've been tempted to buy a liftgate TC and sew some pop out tent sides for it. Make a rear platform that slides out into the liftgate covered area and have a bed with a skylight! Then you'd have more room in the vehicle for gear and a mess kit. It's a fairly ideal chuck wagon.
You don't need 4x4 to do mild off roading either! I take my little Fiesta up steep old logging trails when I get bored sometimes. A good set of tires is more important. Getting an extra inch or two of clearance would pay out way better than 4x4, and that's pretty easy to accomplish.
Thank you for the progress report. It's fun watching someone else do the first scouting and the heavy lifting.
By the way, did you ever come to any conclusions regarding tire size? I would really like some more clearance on my TC, but I'm not sure an extra inch would be worth the cost.
Is a lift-kit possible on a TC? I suspect not, but I just don't know.
