Burning Through Speedo Gears

1978 F150, auto trans. Speedo wasn't working, but I know the cable is good because I pulled it out of the tranny housing and spun it, while someone watched the speedo gauge. The driven gear was damaged (teeth flattened), so I ordered a new one on Bronco Graveyard. Got it, installed it, drove it... speedo still no work-o.

So I pulled the driven gear, and it is trashed too! Teeth are flattened.

The worm fear in the tranny looks fine (from what I can see), so I'm wondering if anyone knows what the problem might be.

Two different speedo gears: DRIVE gear located on output shaft of transmission, DRIVEN gear located at end of speedo cable.

Two different types of nylon DRIVEN gears (see pic). Your truck uses TYPES 1 - 2 or 2A, the teeth run this-away: /////

TYPE 2B, the teeth run this-away: \\\\\ You cannot use this type of DRIVEN gear, as its teeth will be flattened out by the DRIVE gear.

Great stuff, NumberDummy. I'm learning as I go. Much appreciated, I'm sure that will help.

Do you know the original driven gear for the NP205 in 1978? The one I bought was exactly like the one the previous owner had in there, which I guess was 2B. So now I don't know which I should buy.

Here are some pics of both the old and new driven gears.

Looking down on the new driven gear.

The old driven gear

Both look like ////

So I definitely don't have 2B. Any other thoughts why they are getting torn up?

The DRIVEN gear is retained to the cable with a metal clip. Is the clip present?

Which A/T does your truck have? Is it the original or was it swapped in at some point?

Yes the clip is present and functional (holds the driven gear to the cable). It is a C4 AT.

I checked with Bronco Graveyard, and they only sell the version I bought (pictured above). Any thoughts on what else could be causing the driven gear to be torn up?

There is no individual DRIVE gear, as it's made as part of the C4's output shaft.

How many teeth does the DRIVEN gear have?

Yes I understand that there is no individual drive gear. I have been referring to the driven gear in every post since you corrected me in my first post. Thanks again for sorting me out. The driven gear is 17t. Is this not correct?

Any thoughts on the driven gear? The one I replaced is a 17t gear. The o-ring on the speedo cable is good, seal feels tight. Not sure what's up.
