problem with c6 shift pattern seems to be backwards

I just got my c6 transmission back in my 1978 f150. The problem I'm having is on the steering Colum it reads prnd21 but this does not match with my I have to have the shifter in 1 to be in park 2 reverse n neutral and between n and r is drive and so on. Can any one tell me how to fix this back to the way it is supposed to be where p will be park. The transmission works fine and does not slip it just seems that it is backwards for some reason.

I have the rod running straight form the steering Colum down to the transmission. so is the problem inside the transmission or am I missing a piece outside. I have seen some truck in the junkyard that had a piece on the frame that ran over to the transmission but I don't ever recall my truck having this piece on the frame.

I think the lever on the side of the trans where the rod attaches is wrong. It points either up or down. Whichever way it is pointing, it needs to point the other way.

Is the C6 original to the truck or did you buy a C6 from a junkyard?

it is original to the truck. but I'm finally just getting it back in after having it out for over 10 years. As I finally have time to work on the truck again.

I'm not sure if the valve body is the original one for this transmission as I had a couple of them sitting around over the years but I do believe that it is the original valve body for this transmission. I had a couple of extra valve bodies form two wheel drive transmission as I had picked up a couple of two wheel drive transmission when I was buying up engines. not sure if that make a difference.

man, what a great anti-theft device! If I were the only one driving the truck I'd leave it. Talk about confusing a thief....

The manual control selector lever for a car has a different configuration than a truck.

It is a great anti theft but I plain on racing the truck next year and don't know how strict they will be about it.

If I'm thinking about the right piece the manual control selector lever is the piece on the outside of the transmission where the rod form the steering column comes down and connects to the transmission. Than I know that piece is the right one for the transmission and truck. I think its just upside down as its pointing up and form the pictures I can find online looks like it needs to go down. So far today I have gotten the pan off and valve body out. but the nut on its being a pain as there is not much room to work and I cant get a socket on it do to the fact that I can't pull the kick down lever on the inside out as it is hitting the drum inside the transmission.

Use a 7/8" box end wrench to remove the nut. You can "snake" the wrench over the kick down lever to get it on the nut that retains the manual selector lever.

if you take your selector lever and turn it about 140 degrees than it would be about where mine is in park.

if you turn in so its about 85 degrees about where the bolt hole is for the safety swich than it would be in first according to the transmission but in park according to the shifter

My C6 is original to the truck, and I forgot to look at it. I'll try and remember tonight.
