I'm looking at a used SCT tuner with three MPT custom tunes. Aren't these vin locked to the original vehicle?
Would running custom tunes made for another truck be a good idea? Probably not.
Could I get custom tunes from somebody else and install them in this tuner?
Anybody ever run MPT tunes? Thanks for your help.
SCT tunes that come on the tuner are generic. Make sure it's not Vin locked to another truck before buying. Just plug it in and it will tell you if it is.
Custom tunes are written to a specific truck strategy and consideration given to modifications installed. I wouldn't run a custom tune designed for a different truck. You could run the generic tunes and add tunes written for your truck, then erase the other custom tunes when you add yours. Normally limited on how many tunes it can hold.
It's Vin locked when you load a tune other than stock

Yes I've been doing lots of reading on this. Looks like if it's unlocked it might be worth close to what he's asking, just for the device and canned tunes. if not I would need to send it to SCT and get it unlocked for a cost. Making it basically worthless.

Correct. New is about $400, custom tunes or not. If it's locked, it's a brick and will cost to have it unlocked.
Well, for all intents and purposes the "custom" tunes are also canned tunes they have on file until you email back and ask for changes.
The canned SCT tunes were written by Eric @ Innovative FWIW
I just purchased 2 tunes from WPE, yet this is business day #3 and I haven't heard anything.

So all SCT canned tunes are from innovative? Must be pretty decent then? Do the canned tunes get rid of EGR delete CELs? Really all I'm looking for is a little more power and no more CEL.

You can turn the EGR off with the SCT canned tunes.
As for the canned tunes, each engine responds differently. Some like them and are satisfied, others want more power or tweaks done to improve performance.
I have tunes from Quicktricks and Gearheads as well. Looney Tune is a raped ape, but not my favorite as a DD or in cold weather.
SRL is also brutal, but doesn't shift very well with my combo so I rarely use it. Gearhead's 8K tune has been my go to DD for over a year now.
The Canned Street tune is a great DD, especially city driving. The canned Performance tune is good on power and fantastic mpg for my truck.

So I went ahead and bought it. It's a SCT #3015 with three custom tunes. I won't be running these because they were for a truck with bigger injectors and turbo. I will be saving my money for some custom tunes of my own some day.
In the meantime I will be running the canned tunes but I'm a little unsure of what I can do without studs. It has four canned tunes
Street
Performance
Tow 65hp
Tow 45hp
So far I'm running the 65hp tow tune and I'm very impressed with this over stock. Can anybody tell me how much HP approximately the performance and street tunes would give me? Also what's the safe range for EGTs because they climb real fast when you get on it. Thanks again.

All the canned tunes are head bolt safe. The Performance Tune has excellent highway MPG IMHO. Street Tune is a good city tune.
