When I bought this truck('03) few months ago I fell in love with the straight pipe, cat less exhaust and that turbo whistle.
Fast forward to now, it's just bordering on darn annoying.......so, took the local exhaust guy with 40 years worth of knowledge to get me a muffler that will dull the whistle but not that "bark" under throttle.....I'm sure you all know the bark I refer to. Long story short, the FLO PRO twister style muffler he installed did nothing to dull the whistle and actually quieted down the bark a little bit.
Anyone else had this issue? I don't want to spend a fortune on another muffler or an entire set up. Really hoping there is something out there.
I was afraid of that
I have read of some guys taking a 03 turbo and installing on a newer 6.0
I just don't want to end up with a fix it ticket, and living in town I do care about that aspect as well. This time of year is the best time(and spring) to enjoy fresh air with the windows open, I know I get annoyed at times. Don't want to be "that" neighbor with the teenager that drives the jet engine sounding truck.
I wonder how it would sound with the cat back on with no muffler? Really don't want to go that route.
Put the cat back on. Dulls the whistle but still get the V8 roar WOT.
Josh
Thanks Josh, I was told that my another Ford mechanic, just hate to spend a ton on a cat, I never had the cat from this truck.
Maybe I could find one from a salvage yard reasonable.
My next question Josh would be if I get a cat should it go where it was in the first place? Does it make a difference if it's farther downstream?
Also, how much back pressure does a cat add?
Thanks jsm,
Does it still bark when you give it some WOT? That is what I am really after, I don't need to sound like a Gulfstream biz jet getting ready for take off but don't want to make it sound like a bone stock exhaust truck either.
My wife decided she didn't want to listen to the jet engine while I'm parking the camper and her giving me directions. I got this one, I had a diamond eye 4" without the cat or muffler. This removed the jet engine sound, but definitely still didn't sound stock. I then had to put the stock cat back on for emissions. That made it even quieter, but you could still tell it wasn't stock. The directions that came with my diamond eye said if the turbo is too loud for your taste this could be toned down by reinstalling the factory cat. Never tried that option.
Thanks jsm,

I also tried the no cat or muffler on my truck with a 5" mbrp. Couldn't stand the high pitched whistle at idle and was really annoying at high idle. I put the cat back on with no muffler it sounds great and no high pitched ear piercing whistle. The factory muffler I believe restricts flow more than the cat.
