Another 262 question....

I'm trying to eliminate all of the Gremlins in my 64 262. I've pinpointed an issue with the carb (PO had a power control valve instead of spark control, I've got a new one on the way). I pulled the plugs, and the #1 plug is black on one side, tan on the other. Any idea of what would cause this? The others look fine, except #3 has a couple of small chips in the porcelain. The carb is also popping under heavy acceleration.

Black means an over rich condition. Make sure the stock plugs are in a stock engine. Lots of people stuff hotter or colder plugs in to compensate for other problems without understanding how plugs work, too.

Make sure timing is correct and such, wires are installed in firing order. Carburetors should never pop like that as you know. Basically it's a matter of getting everything dialed in as tight as possible - from ignition coil and wires, battery, fuel pump, even the thermostat, verify engine timing and when everything is done then dial in the carb idle mixture for a final tune.

A mechanic's vacuum gauge is very useful in both diagnostics and engine as well as carb tuning, I recommend these highly.
