I have a 89 f-150 xlt with what i believe is the m5od (4 speed with O.D) transmission and the 5.0 motor, the trans has been whining since ive owned the truck and it started poping out of reverse on me a couple months ago, now i have to slam it into gear to make it go anywhere even ehen im going down the road! The clutch is fine but the trans is hanging up, anyways i have a granny gear transmission a buddy of mine gave me out of an 85 f150 that had the inline 6 if i take the bell housing off of my transmission can i put the internal slave cylinder on that transmission? Will it work or will i have to find a way to put an external slave cylinder on it? Thanks in advance!
The bell housing is integral to the case and can not be removed.
Since you have whine, I would assume the bearings are toast. These transmissions have a removable top that incorporates the shifter and gives access to the shift forks. You probably have shift fork problems as well as bearing issues, possibly due to low fluid.
I suggest you remove that transmission and have it rebuilt.
Stop driving it and slamming into gear. You might be able to salvage it if you act now.
You can swap the other trans in, but you need the bell and clutch set up from the other trans, and you will have to figure out the cross member and driveshaft issues. Like I said, have the Mazda box rebuilt before you destroy it.
Well my transmission is a 4 speed with overdrive, can you tell me what transmission i have? And the truck is extremely weak with that transmission thats another reason i want the granny gear 4 speed
It has 5 forward gears, 5th gear is "o.d" and the truck is a complete turd when you put it in o.d! i dont have good service my phone wont open the links. did ford make a granny gear trans with an internal slave cylinder? If so what was it?
so I got on the computer and I guess the trans in my truck Is the first link you posted. the 4 speed I have is a top load too but I guess its not just as simple as getting a bell housing and a interal slave cylinder and putting that transmission in my truck?
If you swap to the T18/NP435 type non-od granny low 4 speeds, you do not need an internal throw out bearing.
There were plenty of trucks with external hydraulic clutches starting in 1984. (460 and 6.9 diesels started in '83, but those bells won't fit your motor). I'm not sure what year the 4 speed transmissions stopped, but it was probably at least '86 for most, maybe '87.
So you probably need to find a 300 six or 351W equipped truck with the 4 speed. I would guess the 302 could be had with one, but I would also guess that the 300 or 351W would be more likely to have one.
There are several threads about swapping the 4 speed to a 5 speed. Since you may do the reverse, some things will be the same. Expect driveshaft changes, as they may be different lengths.
You best bet is to find a donor and get everything.
One of the problems with the OD transmissions is Ford putting Bonneville ratios in the axles on top of the OD. I'd bet you have no more than a 3.55 axle, or maybe even taller.
What size tire are you running?
My 300 4 speed OD 3.50 geared E150 was a pooch with 31" tires. Pretty perky with the stock tiny tire 225-75x15s.
