Fuel Filter Change

Did a 10,000 mile fuel filter change yesterday and found very dirty filters. Are you all finding them to be this dirty? I am wondering if this is typical.

Thanks Scott. Was hoping it was typical. Do you change yours at 10K?

You are worrying me that either the fuel is getting worse or something else is going on.

Mine never looked like that in my 2011. I changed between 10k and 15k miles. I erred on the side of 10k miles because a diesel tech told me that, that is what he does in his. I haven't hit 10k miles on my 2015 yet and doubt I will for a minimum of several more months. Although I may check them the next time I am near the truck.

I would keep the 10k mile change interval - and it does appear that they are doing their job.

Mine have been quite consistantly that dirty. That was one of the reasons I added the Dieselsite system. I fill up the truck everyday and I don't know if that makes for more contaminants or not. I have never gone more than 10K miles between changes.

That primary filter is typical of what I see. The filter is doing it's job. If your filters begin to get that hour glass shape then you should consider reducing you service interval but otherwise I see no reason to be concerned.

I did mine yesterday at 24,000 miles and they looked better than that. I also have the Dieselsite filters. Looks like they are doing a fine job of keeping things clean.

How do the dieselsite filters look?

Mine may also have been clean because in Florida I ran biodiesel at times. I can't do that in Alaska... Well, I could try but then I would be walking.

The top two filters in his photo are the Dieselsite filters.

Dak, the one on the top of the engine is enclosed in plastic. I have never cut one open but probably should to take a look. Next time.

You must have better quality fuel in TX.

THAT is the important one to look at because that is your LAST line of defense before the fuel gets to the injectors....

Just my humble opinion of course.

I don't change my filters but once a year and of course this time I skipped a year because I traded in... Sorry I forgot what the difference filters look like. I thought the top picture was of a couple of upper fuel filters...

There is always next time - as you pointed out.
