OK guys i need some help big time! My 1990 F-150's tranny is about shot. Its a E4OD with a 351W sitting in front of it. Shifting from 2-3 and 3-4 99% of the time it is very rough and stutters, when i say stutter, i mean the whole truck nearly vibrates apart at 60 MPH. I just got it out of the shop today, after 250 bucks worth of diagnostics to the tranny and a few other things theyre telling me that i need a new one, that the current setup isnt worth rebuilding.
Re-man tranny: $3,200.00 For a genuine FoMoCo :-staun
For a Jasper rebuild: $3,000.00
And the Jasper comes with all new cooler, lines, and a warrantee that last longer and goes more miles than the Ford warrantee. So what gives, does this sound right or am i being taken, im on the verge of getting one out of a yard, rebuilding it myself and then swapping them out in my drive way. Help me, I dont wanna scrap my truck but 3,200 is half of what i paid for it.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... $3000 may be a little high, but not by much. I have the same specs on my F150. I needed a rebuilt tranny (local shop, not Jasper or one of the other national companies) and R&R of the rear end axle seals, which ran me $2600 out the door. I think mine may have been a little less $$$ than a complete rebuilt unit, since they basically just replaced the guts of the tranny while reusing the existing case. Not a cheap unit, that E4OD. If you decide to have it rebuilt/replaced, be sure to get an additional tranny cooler! I did this and lowered the fluid temp in the pan by about 15-20 degrees on average. I also added a trans temp gauge
Before you go whole hog and replace anything, do some research here in the tranny section. It may be a long shot, but when I was reviewing posts regardin the E4OD I found mention of similar symptoms. The thread indicated that a grommet may be the culprit.
Like I said, shot in the dark, but something to check out just the same!
Patrick,
I purchased an updated remanufactured E4OD from Ford for my 97 PSD 4x4 for $1600. then threw the tranni shop $600. to install it. It came with a 36month/ 36000 mile warranty too. You'll have to send your old one back to get the core charge back. Get on the phone and call a few dealerships & don't be afraid to throw the numbers that I paid at them. GOOD LUCK !
Redman 351,
Go on line & punch in "Ford automatic transmissions".Try other variants of this to come up with parts, rebuilders, manuals etc.
Being a 1990 model, you'll probably need a lot of "UPDATES" during the rebuild.Be sure you get them all.I've heard that without the updates this trans, will most likely, fail again in under 12000 miles!
Try "MAKCO transmissions inc." on line.Mabe get a rebuild manual for it and see if you might want to try it yourself. If you look at their rebuild kits, you'll notice that the BASIC parts(clutches, bands, seals, bushings) are relatively inexpensive. Also, one of the shops had a super warrantee, with updates and all.It would have been around $1875.00 including the torque convertor. You'll just have to install it yourself. You can buy a nice floorjack and stanchions for that $600.00 install fee!
I just got a manual for my 1993 "AOD" and found a simple repair for mine that cost me NOTHING but a little bit of time.Mine had been rebuilt by a local shop(previous owner). The snap ring for the overdrive servo was misshaped(misshandled by the rebuilder!) and had come out.It let the servo cover & piston move out and disingage the overdrive band.I had an instant two speed trans!
I've done a lot of GM TH trans rebuids & modifications but none of the new FORD transmissions. You'll need to stop at a FORD dealer & have the trans codes checked to be sure you don't just have an electrical problem.I believe the pressure regulator is electric! This might be you trouble. The whole solenoid pack is only $126.00.
I paid $1800 installed, including an external cooler, a shift kit and all the updates for an E4OD in a 4x4. This was from an independent local shop. The warranty was only a year, but this shop has been in business since 1950 and my family has been doing business with them for a long time.
If it has over 120,000 miles on it, it is probably not something simple and needs a complete rebuild. You can pull your own diagnostic codes with a simple $20 code scanner or even a paperclip and the instructions you can find here if you look.
try e bay there is a place in arizona phoinex transmmisions that will get ya a rebuild i paid 950.00 seems to be working good so far you can find this company on ebay
Check out the May issue of Four Wheeler magazine for a great article about rebuilding the E4OD trans. They show the parts and lots of good info is present and pics, too!
