Hey guys im new to the site and need some help. I just purchased a 1990 7.3 idi 4x4 with a jasper long block with 15,167 miles and a rebuilt trans with 2,567 miles the trans is kicking out and into over drive and over revs it bucks almost when it kicks out of od and then pops back in my over drive light flashes on when i turn the key but turns of in a second and doesent come on at all while running anything will help me thanks.
welcome 1990.........ever been told your so "1999"? well, around here we'd take offense to that, because that's just too modern.
the transmission in your truck is called a E40D (Electronic 4 speed Over Drive.)
it is controlled via a brain, and sensors.
when one or more of these singles doesn't/or incorrectly gets to the brain, the brain tells the trans wrong information, and the results can be catastrophic if not fixed.in fact, the issue your having is likely the reason for the rebuilt trans in there now.sometimes these are swapped needlessly, not due to a mechanical failure at all,but a very small electrical issue.
fear not though,it's actually (in most cases) a very easy, and affordable repair.
do you have a code reader?
does your tach and speedometer appear to be functioning properly?
do your brake lights and interior dome lite work properly?
are there any bare/chafed wires on the truck that you know about?
it does sound like your TPS has failed to me by your description so far though.
(don't go throwing parts at it just yet.just a wild first guess so far. )
My speedo works but not my taci dont have in the cab lights just yet i dont have a code reader and all the plugs wires were replaced on the bill they said they replaced all the wires.
The trans computer gets signals from the VSS, Tach sender, TPS, MLPS, a barometric pressure sensor, and a couple others I think... A bad Tach sensor will definately cause problems. The Tach sensor is just to the right and a little back from the oil filler, when looking at it from in front. It's a 1" hex head with two wires coming from it. The wires tend to get chafed right there...
I had just put in a new Ford reman trans and had shifting problems ( hard hitting/slamming into gear) the ford repair man told me it was because my tach wasnt working. Replaced that same issue. COm to find out when i swapped in a manual trans engine I never put on thte TPS to the IP. That TPS and tach combo was what fixed the shifting.
