Years ago, I did the old take the shim out from behond the AC clutch to tighten up the air gap. a coupke years later, I tried (mistakenly) to grind a few 1000's from the back of the clutch to tighten it up a bit more. It worked for a while, but obvioulsy not so much anymore since I'm guessing that the bolt loosened up and the clutch seemingly has taken a leave of absence. Now, looking for parts, I find that I can replace just the outer clutch for about $42. But for $110, there is a kit with the pulley, the coil and the outer clutch. My question is, should I replace it all at this time? I have 375k on the truck. Obviously the outer clutch is an easy 1 bolt fix. How hard is it and what is involved in pulling the pulley and the coil? Thanks in advance for any input
It wouldn't be much more than $110 to swap the whole compressor. Honestly, that's what I'd do. It may be pure coincidence, but it seems like about half the time the shaft seal on the compressor starts leaking shortly after messing with the clutch.
