Air Filter Lid Flip

I was out in our high school auto shop and someone had there truck and the air filter lid was flipped upside down and he said it improves air flow and is basicly a cheap preformance enhancement. Is this true or a myth if its rrueiwill do it to my truck.

The air filter lid flip improves hot air flow from the engine compartment instead of the cool air from outside the engine compartment with a correctly functioning air filter system.

Edit, hotter air into the intake decreases performance....

Leave that dysfunctional looking and functioning hack to all the Chevy guys who like to do that. I know a guy who does it at as well and it's stupid.

It does give a more "powerful" sound as you don't muffle the intake noise very effectively.

And it "just makes sense" that opening up the air intake would reduce restriction and would improve power. But what I mean by "just makes sense" is that it ONLY makes sense, it doesn't also prove to be true. Because, as twigsV10 said, it lets you pull hot air into the intake rather than cold air. Hot air is less dense than cold air (which is why hot air balloons work), but that means there's not as much air in the air. It's like going up in the mountains, as the air gets less dense engine performance drops. So your best bet is a well-designed intake duct that puls air from someplace cooler, like right behind the grill.

I ran those open chrome air cleaners and then went to a factory setup. Night and day difference. I have more power WITH the stock system than I did the chrome open air cleaner any time of the year. For as much as these engines put out in stock to mildly built form, the stock air cleaner isn't going to cause enough of a restriction to worry about. Focus on the exhaust.
