Cold Air Intake

whats the opinion on a good CAI? and exactly how do they work.. I've heard the stories about hot air into engine isnt good.. are the CAI's true cold air? for instance do they have a cover that closes off the air from the engine bay and pulls it from the fender well ?

Yea go with a MAC, they do all the same as the above and cost a fraction of the price--$140. Here is a site that has the MAC for the 4.2 fo 140--http://onestoptruckshop.com/ONLineOrdering/MACIntake.htm
check it out

www.motorhaven.com
www.macperformance.com

Here, that'll be better for ya. Either site will work fine though I recommend Motorhaven...better service IMO.

Thanks Joesph!
I like to see folks patronize Motorhaven. It helps keep the money in the family!
That is where I bought my MAC kit and was very pleased with the service, ship time, price and quality of the product.

What about the engine compartment heat? I looked at the MAC kit and it seems to just be an open filter in the engine bay.. It gets 90* and higher in central texas.. What will that do to my performance ?

You will get increased performance bud, trust me. It has been dyno proven for 12.6 hp. Talley from another truck site has one on his truck and dyno'ed 6rwhp over the poor-man's intake. (the poor man's intake is where you drop in a K&N filter and chop off the filter housing which is actually better than stock by a little bit) So in other words, he was probably pushing around 8rwhp over stock. That's really good for an intake.

As far as cold air intakes go, if I had to pick the closest cold air intake there is...I'd say volant because it is housed in and sucks from the fender wall...but I'll bet that gains are the same.

hey Strick4.2, WHY are you saying that when driveing at speed that CAI can't pull hot air from the engine compartment, into the engine? driveing at speed doesnt have much to do with the air under the hood, and Yeah, I've always wonderd why they call it a Cold Air Intake lol do they Magically create cold air :P I mean, its pullin the exact same air that stock is, just more of it, far as I'm concerned the only CAI is a Ram Air Hood System My .02 cents :P

Strick is liek dead nowadays.......he used to be an everydayer like 8 post a day but he hasnt posted even since july......... the statement u made with the stock vs cai is wrong though....they dont come from the same place...notice stock is completly enclosed and aftermarket kind of hang off to the side by the fender well where cold air circulates and the cai only sucks in the coldest air...
