i have a 86 full size bronco 351w 5.8l . i love it to death!!! i have a question, what would deliver better air intake to the CARB. I purchased a orginial air cleaner from Ebay with dual snorkels( from mustage 5.0 ho) and i notice that on the opposite side radiator there is a mounting area just like the passanger side for air intake. Would i get better air flow from that or buy a chrome aftermarket air cleaner thats open all the way around?
You might be able to get cooler air with the dual snorkel set-up if the intake air is coming from farther away from the engine. Otherwise with the chrome open air filter set-up, you'll probably be taking in warmer air from on top of the engine.
Cooler/Denser air = More Power
On my 1984 351W H.O., I am running a 14" open air filter and get much better airflow than with the factory 17-1/4" single-snorkel air cleaner. I think the dual-snorkel intake would be very similar to the open style, without drawing in hot air from around the engine, and would be better. I do alot of slow-speed off-roading, which is why I went with the open style. I also don't have to worry about all of the bugs (grasshoppers, etc.) clogging the snorkel duct from the front grill. Only in Texas!
One thing to remember, if you go with the open air cleaner you will loose a couple things: 1. Warm air riser tube. 2. Filter for air intake of PCV system. Filter is easy, just get a vented/filtered oil breather cap. Riser tube, well just get used to it being really cold blooded when it's cold outside.
I put a 14" chrome air cleaner and K&N filter on my '85. It worked great except for the cold blooded thing. Oh, there was a vacuum line that had to be blocked off that went to an actuator on the original air cleaner, but that's no big deal.
I was thinking once i do put the dual snorkel on i will probably use a some type of a screen, like (Justshootme84) mentioned the buggs here in TEXAS are a big factor on the highway.
Thanks for the input guys.
If you any of you have ever installed a GEAR driving timing chain, do you like it better then the CHAIN?
