True, for those with no mechanical inclination, they should follow the service manual on their vehicle religiously. The more experienced you are, the less necessary the shop manual becomes. I'm not claiming to be an expert, either. My knowledge is exceeded tenfold by many members on these boards. But, and perhaps this is a foolish claim, but I've spent enough time working on vehicles and watching more experienced hands work on vehicles that I'm comfortable straying from the service manual from time to time. I'm sure I would receive a dozen different opinions on how I did my wheel bearings, but they've been problem free for six months now so I don't think I screwed up too badly.
