ignition control module

I have a 1985 f-150 with A 4.9 liter. I've been having problems with the ECM. I purchased a aftermarket distributor that just has A pigtail that has a three prong female plug. I'm trying to get away from the ignition control module. Is there any way in my truck's wiring harness to wire in this different pigtail? The original pigtail is 6 wires. Can anyone tell me how this can be done? Thank you...

Sounds like a DSII swap.
What colors are the wires?
Black, orange and purple?
Does it have a vacuum advance?

You wil need the blue Duraspark module, a DSII compatible coil and the OEM harness between the three.
All the other wiring and plugs already exist in your truck's harness.

OK thanks for the reply. I'll have to check the wire colors. But what I don't understand is when you do a search on distributors for that year and engine it has two different ones available.

The 4.9 was available in an F250..
Heavier trucks had different emissions and came with the DSII ignition.

This is the same deal as the 351W in a 150 or the 351W HO in a 250/350

The coil and module can be found through any LAP.
I would suggest a quality module like the Echlin TP40 over a $19.95 module from Autozone.

The harness is a junkyard item and will include the proper distributor and coil connector, and a socket for the o/p/b pigtail of the module.
You will likely need to unwrap a bit of the harness on your fender in order to find the white and red DSII socket to plug into the other side of the module.
Painless wiring makes one but it is stupid expensive and reports say the four pin connector is miswired from the jumper.

Welcome to the forum Adam!

I'm on my phone so I don't see any sigs or post numbers or anything like that.

Have you ever considered just relocating your TFI to a heatsink?
There are two sites I can think of that sell a harness.
One is a a Mustang page, the other a Miata/5.0l swap page.

You wil need the blue Duraspark module...
DuraSpark ignition modules are identified by a colored plastic square above where the fires feed out.
