Ok, I have an 88 150 5.0efi. Worn out. Scored a 85 351 4v out of a 250. Fuel supply no problem. exhaust no prob. Ignition is beyond my feeble skills. Should I try to wire the stock gear, or am i just wasting my time? I toyed with the idea of a magneto. Any help/suggestions? thanks in advance. Mike
The original efi ignition will not work. It needs all those sensors and the computer to make timing calculations. You need to get a blue connector duraspark II module and wire it in.
Thanks.
My next question would be... What particular year/models would have the duraspark II parts on them? Any idea of how much they should cost used as opposed to a new setup? TIA Mike
Mike, Ford started the DS ignition in late 74. I would search for a 76 up system though. The 75's used a green grommet module and wired it differently than later models.
You will need the module, distributor, and the wiring harness to connect them. Ford used this system on just about all their vehicles in this era, so look for any Ford from the late 70's to early 80's. (As Franklin says, get a "blue grommet" module).
You also will need a ballast resistor (for the coil) to mount on the firewall. Any auto parts store is a source.
These parts should be dirt-cheap from a yard. The only part that you can't get new is the wiring harness, although you can easily make one up.
There's plenty of DuraSpark experts here, if you run into any problems.
