So I'm contemplating installing an auxiliary electric fuel pump on my 7.3 IDI. I want to wire it to a switch on the dash and use it only to prime the system to make starting the truck easier, and then allow it to run off of the mechanical pump once it's actually running.
Is such an installation feasible?
Has anyone done it?
Can you recommend products and/or literature to read to make the install easier?
Simplicity's sake. It takes less time to do an install than an install and a removal.
Redundancy. I can function with both or with either.
Reliability. If a fuel pump goes out, I'm not dead in the water as long as I still have the other one. And it's a little less wear on both parts.

There are tons of people that have done this.
Why don't you save yourself the time waiting for responses, do a search, and read all the posts that come up telling how to do it.
Its been discussed quite a bit.....
Tried. I've not been able to use the search function effectively, and practically all of the threads I've come across are a simple swap; not installing an auxiliary pump.
I've got a better, cheaper solution: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fuel-Pump-Fuel-Line-Hand-Primer-Bulb-All-Fuels10mm-3-8-Length-150MM-9001080A-/351462098170?hash=item51d4c604fa&vxp=mtr
Put it in line, after the low pressure fuel pump. You won't /need/ to prime the system every morning once you install it -- the checkvalves internally will keep things primed for you.
I once thought about doing the same thing you were doing; had trouble with it, and went the above route. Since I've done it, I've not had /any/ times where my truck would do the start-die-crank-start pattern typical of losing prime; and once I got my GP system working right, it has always fired off within 5 seconds of cranking.
Copy the web address of the pre-power stroke diesel thread page, then copy it into a Google search.
Insert "site:" in front of that. then add your search criteria behind the whole thing.
Example:
That will force Google to search all of the IDI forum on FTE instead of using the native(and loathesome) search feature.
As for your install, I used to run both. Its great for priming the system!
Just don't run the e-pump before the lift pump without a diverter. If the lift pump diaphragm ruptures the e-pump will pump diesel into the crankcase.
<p>if you are going to use it just for priming you can put it in the line between tank and lift pump. the closer to the tank the better.</p><p>but as said above, if the diaphragm in the lift pump ruptures the e-pump will fill the crankcase up with diesel.</p><p>i mounted a facet duralift pump between the lift pump and filter. then when the lift pump died i just removed it, connected the lines together, and put a block off plate on the engine.</p>
