E4OD technical question

Since I'm working on planning the build for my next rig, the transmission obviously came up I'm planning on using a 460.

I'm wondering if it's possible to put a lower first gear in an E4OD when rebuilding?

I understand that it's going to spread the gears wider but I'll also be having a auxiliary O/D splitting unit so that won't be an issue. I am aware of being able to get a under/over unit or have a lower axle ratio but neither of those are really an option.

And for the curious I do have a controller to shift the splitter and the auto - hence allowing it to operate as a 8 speed automatic (still only one reverse - who needs a split reverse gear ). As well the lower first gear is only used when in tow mode...

ANYTHING is possible given enough time and money. I don't know how much money you have, but I know you don't have enough money to change the gearing in an E4OD. That would take a complete custom gearset. It is impossible to change only one gear in an automatic. All gears are in mesh all the time, so if one changes, they all change.

You need someone that knows how to design planetary gearsets to design an all new gearset, and then you need a shop that has the machinery to build a custom planetary. There are only a few places in the country that are capable of doing this. I'll bet by the time you get this done you would be into seven figures. That's not a typo, I said 7 figures.

Thanks for replying Mark! Good to know - I definitely don't have seven figures to do that. I just wanted to be sure there wasn't something already done.

There isn't for an E4OD or 4R100.

if you had any lower of a first gear,it wouldn't be useful on the street.you can already take off comfortably in 2nd if you wish.
take off and see how quickly your truck shifts for the first time (from 1st entering 2nd) then think,do i really want that shortened for any good reason?

now,if you need a low off road gear, then im with ya.that's what the t-cases lo range is used for.i use this several times daily.by several,i mean possibly as much as literally 50 times per day at times.

When Ford switched from the 4R100 to the 5R110 first gear went from the 4R100's 2.71:1 to 3.09:1. A lower first gear can help.

Absolutely. The 6r80 gear ratios and spread are great.

I'd love to find a way to swap the 6r80 into these trucks. Heck a 6.2l/6r80 swap would be pretty cool.
