Guy's you can see by my posts what I have done to my truck.
We just came back from vacation 5000miles Ontario Canada to South Dakota then north to Saskatchewan and back. Pulled a 31' cameo 5th wheel camper weighing 13,800 lbs. Truck ran great, good power and pull in the hills egt ran 600 to 1050, engine 180 - 190 but trans (5 spd manual) after 1.5 hrs would run 225-250 F . at that temp clutch would go away or get very spongy. tried to run slower down to 50 mph but it didn't change much. I would pull off and let it cool down and go again. in the morning it would work like new. I think I was boiling the oil in the slave cylinder.
Any suggestion's ?
has anyone put a trans cooler on a manual?
HB
so on the zf5 manual trans there is not an oil cooler like on the zf6, did someone put a temp sensor in the housing or drain plug location to measure the temp of the gear box oil. did the clutch ever slip or not fully disen gauge on you or is it just fill soft?
I had a temp gauge put in and they put it in the drain plug
The clutch never slipped just would not disengage, pedal at times would go to the floor and not come backup.
I guess my question is can I put a cooler on a manual trans?

there has been covers made for the zf5 that go where the pto covers are. they are finned cast aluminum and add about 2 quarts of volume to the trans fluid, and have cooling fins.
I have not looked for them for mine, last time I towed my 5th wheel through death valley at noon my trans went to 280, it actually smelled burnt when I changed it.
in all that my clutch never changes
How old are the hyd parts of the clutch mechanism? The fluid may be boiling and flushing out the old fluid with nice fresh may help or some better fluid that has a higher boiling point.
Also...just rig up a small pump, core and filter system to cool the fluid externally if it get too hot. its out therd but possible
The Clutch has been change out as the owner told me. But I don't know about the cylinders or oil in them. I had the trans oil change before we went so I know its not that. I think the oil in clutch cylinder and line needs to be changed with out a drought maybe a slave cylinder Too. I Read some where that someone bought or made a metal shield to direct air up at the trans. This was my thought out on the road if it got any worse.

It may be unrelated but my dad's truck will do something similar when it gets worked hard. Everything seems to be good so we believe the dual mass is showing its age and needs to be replaced.
Changing the fluid in the line is probably a good idea as well.
Do you notice anything else about it when it does this? Any strange smells or sounds?
