Fire rings

So I have been thinking a lot about fire ringing or o-ringing my block. Since I won't be going over 80psi I can get away with machining the block only going both directions. My biggest concern with fire ringing it is the length of time the fire rings will last. Since I drive a company vehicle every day my truck sits a lot. I put maybe 3k a year on it. I am going to compound turbos cause I don't want the lag of a big single.

So the question is how many miles can I expect to get on a set of stainless steel fire rings or ss o-ring.

I have no idea how many miles you'd get. That's really 2 things that don't go together. Fire ringing, and worrying about how many miles you'd get out of them. Fire ringing is for big power, and with big power, you sacrifice longevity. I've had my 460 block in my race car fire ringed for 7-8 years of racing, apart a few times for a rebuild, and never changed them.

Consider the mileage you are driving. You will blow something else on that motor long before the fire rings go. I feel you would be just fine for a decade. 600 bhp out of a 7.3 is no joke. You will be well over 700 at the crank, and to do that on fuel without giggle gas is going to be a pretty tasty motor build. I would absolutely be running them!

well I have been talking to my brother and found out his friend that is building his idi engine has a o-ring groove cutter, found out cause I was talking to my brother about his engine and they are getting ready to o-ring his block so if he goes to compounds on his idi. so with that in mind I will probably go with the O-rings and worst case I will spend 300 bucks for the tool to cut the grooves.

I hope you have billet rods and crankshaft if I'm understanding what you are building correct. Main girdle, etc.

Sure Nick. It's a 514, 847hp, 699tq. 14:1 JE flattops, h beam rods, A460 heads flow 430cfm, .730 lift comp cam solid roller, trick flow dominator intake, 4.14 stroke steel crank, t&d shaft rockers, etc. It's for sale pretty darn cheap, I built another motor for a different car and am running that.

when the engine comes out and prepped for my new truck is when I will o-ring the block and put in rods and girdle will go in along with the compound turbos.

?is there an aftermarket crankshaft? cause I have already broke 1 in half.

still sits in my garage as a reminder of what propane and timing can do to a crankshaft.

Now that you mention that, I guess I'm not sure if there is an aftermarket crankshaft. I'd bet crower would build one.

Very nice. built a SCAT stroker a few years back with a friend of my dads. I never even put it in the truck, but it was sold to a close friend and he has since moved to TX, his flat bottom jet boat absolutely screams. I will never ride in it again....ever!

Just a thought. If you guys are pretty proficient with cutting them yourselves then go for it, but for the cost of the tool, and the labor to have it done, its not all too much more to have them done by a shop that has years of experience behind them.

Regarding the cam, call Swamps, I'm pretty sure their stage 2 cam would be about right for the setup and HP. I know WOP performance used to have a ice stage 1 cam, but I do not believe they are WOP any more. I think H&S bought them.

Are you guys running ported heads on it? There is a lot of room for improvement on the intake side of the 7.3 heads, cheap no, but I thought I'd ask.

Ported heads and the correct cam will clean up the burn on these tremendously. Not to mention they will run quite a bit cooler across the board when compared to a stock head and cam on the same fueling.

For a cam my brothers friend is wanting me to test a cam for him. I don't want to go into porting heads cause that is expensive. And I'm not going for a 1000hp, if I hit 600 I will be more then happy with it. And my origanal goal was 500hp and then I got my 238/100 upgraded to 300/200 for free cause of some issues that I was having. So I might as well go for 600 now that I will have fuel to support it.
