Hey guys, so behind my wheel, theres some rust. It's very noticeable about 10+ feet away. Just wondering is there anything I can use to get the rust off? It's behind my driver side rear tire. Maybe a tough teen scrubby pad that removes rust? Rust oleum? This might be a dumb question but I'm just making sure I can use something that won't hurt it in the long run
there are some "rust converters" that do a chemical reaction with the rust and turn it to a hard black crust.... then you paint it with something like rustoleum enamel paint.
Your rust seems to be surface rust and not massive ? You can wire brush to get the loose stuff off, wipe it clean and use a "red oxide primer" that you paint on with a brush, then put a grey or black finish paint on that........... Rustoleum and others make the RED OXIDE PRIMER.
I would use something similar to 'Exrust' by Kano Labs. It uses Phosphoric acid to eliminate the rust and leave behind a phosphate layer that is paintable. You can find something similar at the home center/hardware store. You brush or spray it on and rinse it off. May have to use a stiff brush on heavy rust. After drying it's ready to paint. You might just want to go black there or you could use body color. Black Rustoleum would be good in a semi-gloss.
The best treatment for the problem you have is POR-15 (available online). It is not a rust remover or dissolver but totally coats the rust and blocks any further water and air from reaching the bare metal. The nice thing is you don't have to mess around trying to get to bare metal. It is not cheap, but cheaper than replacing parts down the line, and you have to be very careful about keeping and water away from it until after is applied. I've used it for years on everything from Mercedes to old farm tractors and never had a part to rust again after it is treated.
