Drop in MPG

About a week or two ago i started a thread stating that i noticed my excursion wasnt emitting black smoke under hard acceleration like it normally would and that it was more of a white/clear smoke.

So i put a new fuel filter and cleaned where the filter goes into.

But with this issue ive noticed that i went from 19-20 mpg to 17 mpg i do "city' driving its all country roads to and from work but im just trying to figure it all out

It's pretty early to call it, unless you go through several tanks per week - but the white smoke can't be good. Without a scan tool/gauge, there are a few tests you can do. Pull the connector to the ICP and see how that treats you.

It's a 2000, but it's the same. The intake has been removed and he has some upgraded goodies in there, but you can see where the ICP is on the drivers side head. Pull that connector and see how the truck does.

You will want to run multiple tanks of fuel before you can determine actual mileage. So many factors can change your fuel mileage. How you drive, where you drive, what time of day you drive, where you get fuel, etc.

Also, 17mpg is not bad at all. I would say that is about average to above average. Especially as these trucks age more. You would be surprised how many guys I get calling in looking for a chip to increase fuel mileage because they see 10mpg.

I unplugged that sensor and did my drive home from work 15minutes. Didn't notice it running any different.

That is a common symptom of a bad ICP sensor. It's an expensive part, but they commonly fail. One experiment to try before replacement: Clean the connector with electrical cleaner and refresh the dielectric grease. This may change the situation for a short time.

So i havnt cleaned that connector yet. I tried tackling another problem, my dash light went out a week or so ago but without driving at night i didnt bother fixing it till today so i checked the connector for the headlights and the illumination control they were fine. then i pulled the dash i had the cluster out and checked the bulb it wasnt blown i took it out and put it back in and before putting the cluster back i checked it and it was working but once i had it all back together it wasnt on... but then the service engine light came on so im at a loss.

Im getting it scanned tomorrow to see what is causing the service light and then hope someone has an idea on the dash light.

I'd wager a P1211 code - this is commonly caused by a bad ICP sensor, a hot tune, or an internal oil leak. All of the above will also really screw with your MPG.

You went through the trouble to take the dash apart, and replaced one bulb out of about a dozen or so? With a friendly/helpful tone - I'd do 'em all the next time in there.
