So about a year ago my transmission popped out of 5th (1-6 gear naming) while I was accelerating out of town. Over time it got worse and worse to the point where I would not even bother putting it into 5th cause it would pop out every time. Last week Wednesday I finally had enough (I wanted to get it fixed before another 400 mile drive to school) so in a day we did the clutch on my truck.
Now my truck drives much nicer, doesn't jump on take offs and no longer pops out of 5th. Here are some pictures of the old pilot bearing and clutch disk.
The pilot was the source of the popping out, since it allows the input shaft to no longer be co-axial with the engine crank. That disk is not happy, that's for sure. That's a lot of work to do in one day.
Jetdoc, as far as I know, and could tell that is a stock clutch.
Nossliw, we inspected the input shaft and there was some wear but it didn't seem excessive or even enough to merit tearing down the entire transmission to fix. Along with that we used the Kevlar bearing supplied with the South Bend Clutch I put in.
Fat Diesel, your remarks coincide with what I was told by a zf6 rebuilder and had read both online and in the FoMoCo manual.
It was a lot of work to do in one day, but I got it ready to come out throughout the day. When my cousin got off work he grabbed the transmission jack from their shop and came over. We only had 2 bellhousing bolts and the crossmember bolts to remove before dropping the transmission. All in all I had about 8 hours in on it and he had about 4. I definitely recommend using a transmission jack for any transmission work where it has to come out.
