The Wisconsin Dells has four major exits.
Exit 92 – South end of the Dells. Really nice hotels, plenty of places to eat, small outlet shopping mall, casino.
• RV sales and supplies. RV Sales & Service in Wisconsin | Scenic Traveler RV Centers If you need parts or service, these people are very nice. I looked up their most expensive 5th wheel, it’s only $59,998.00 so there is no danger of anyone upgrading mid-trip.
• Exit 92 gets you to Baraboo. Baraboo couldn’t be more opposite of the Dells. Circus World and their weekend Fairs. Nice, quiet, small town.
• Aldi, Wal-Mart, Farm & Fleet, Menards are all on Hy12 in Baraboo. Watch out for cops running radar on this section of Hy12. Baraboo might be 5-6 miles from exit 92.
• Mirror Lake and Devil’s Lake state parks are near this exit. Both are huge and two of the most popular parks in the state of Wisconsin. Mirror Lake has boat/canoe rentals and swimming. Lots of camping at both too.
Exit 89 – Middle Dells. Wal-Mart Super Store, Home Depot, Kohl’s, and Dollar Store are all west of the freeway exit.
• I get Diesel at this exit. Shell Station: 532 W Monroe AVE, Wisconsin Dells, WI 53965, this is an actual small truck stop. There are stations at Exit 87 that I would trust for gas but not diesel.
• Nice Butcher shop east of this exit. 230 W Munroe Ave, Lake Delton, WI 53940. The Meat Market is open each day and has great quality meats. They season the meats for you if you desire, before they are wrapped.
• The Wal-Mart is the best place in the dells to shop for groceries, beer, and wine. There are a few smaller stores but the prices are much higher. This place will be crazy crowded with tourists. If you go, go early in the day.
• Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co. 110 Wisconsin Dells Pkwy S, Wisconsin Dells, WI 53965. Great food and atmosphere. Kid friendly with games in the basement. Good pizza, Friday Fish, ribs, and beer sampler. Three levels. Place is huge with good parking.
Exit 87 – This is the exit that your GPS will tell you to get off at. Don’t do it when you have the crazy large 5th wheel trailer on. This will force you to make a left hand turn at maybe the busiest intersection in the Dells. Use exit 85 when you are towing.
• Every drive-thru restaurant on the planet is here along with some very busy gas stations.
• Paul Bunyan’s restaurant is here. No trip to the Dells is complete without a breakfast here. The place is huge, parking around the side. It can look busy on the outside and still have plenty of room inside. Breakfast is all you can eat and served family style. Very, very, very casual. I’m thinking about their Paul Bunyan Cook Shanty Famous Donuts right now. They are so good.
• RT’s pizza. S797 Christmas Mountain Rd, Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin 53965. Just outside of Christmas Mountain resort. Very good pizza and kind of a locals place. Christmas Mountain is a golf / ski resort with condos and camping. Nice place to drive through too. This is 5 to 7 miles from the freeway exit. More firewood on the north side of the road as you leave the Dells.
Exit 85 – Only an over-priced gas station is at this exit. It’s the back way into the Dells. You are about a mile from Sherwood Forest when you get off the exit. Simple drive past Rocky Arbor State Park to your campground. When you have the humongous 5th wheel attached, this is your exit.
• Sherwood Forest is east of this exit.
• If you went west from this exit on Hy12/16, in about a mile, you would pass another campground called Edge-o-Dells. It has a good restaurant that is a sports bar. Good food, nice place to watch a Packer game. Just past the campground are three places that sell wood for campfires. All three are good but the guy with the white table out front is where we typically stop. Guy sells wood for beer money. In July, you might not need a campfire if all the snow is finally off the ground though.
• Across the street from Edge-o-Dells is a gentleman’s club.
• If you continue past Edge-o-Dells and the campfire wood sellers, you will drive into the very small city of Lyndon Station. This is about 6 miles from exit 85. This is where the locals stop for a drink. Several small bars in town. Not much else. On your drive to Lyndon Station, you will pass several more campgrounds. No shortage of camping around the Dells.
• Rocky Arbor is a small state campground for tents and pop-ups. Not as nice as Mirror Lake but for some that started camping with tents, fun to drive through. Park is only open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. There is a nice walking trail and dogs are allowed. Playground for kids.
One last thing. The two main roads in the Dells will be packed in July. Wisconsin Dells Parkway, HY 12/23 goes past all the water parks and is often bumper to bumper traffic. The secret way to get from exit 87 to 89 is Trout Road to Clara Road. Using these back roads, you can get to the Wal-mart or Shell station from Sherwood Forest in minutes. Clara Road was recently re-built and is a nice road. If you go down Wisconsin Dells Parkway, this same trip could take half an hour on some days. Lots of Wisconsin families visit the Dells just for the day. Not all traffic you see are people staying in the Dells. A good number of the families are just visiting their favorite water parks.
Driving in Wisconsin.
• Left Lane Larry was born in Wisconsin. Signs all over the freeways for slower traffic to keep right but we have some real dopes in our state.
• You are safe traveling the freeways at 9mph over the speed limit.
• There always seems to be a cop sitting on the freeway at the Dells, also in Black River falls for those heading in from the west. Since we moved our speed limits to 70mph, don’t see many cops on the freeways.
• Construction north of Madison. Replacing some bridges.
• Construction west of Milwaukee on 94.
Any other questions, please ask. Wisconsin is a beautiful state and the Dells has everything anyone needs in July. You are going to have fun, if you want to.
