Grinding while breaking

Whenever I am braking I am hearing a grinding noise coming from my front left wheel. I took the tire off and put a new rotor and pads on and there was still a grinding noise. Could this be the wheel bearing? I occasionally hear this noise when coasting but it always makes noise when I am breaking.
Thanks

If its 4x4, it could be the hub bearing. Did you check it for excess play or rotate it when u had it jacked up?

Yes it is a 4x4. I did not check for excess play when I had it jacked up. I will check that this afternoon. I did lock the hubs this morning when I drove to work to see if that would reduce the play and stop the noise but it was still making the same noise. Would I need to buy a new warn hub assembly or could I change out the barring within the hub?

This is what you are looking for: Amazon.com: Timken SP580205 Axle Bearing and Hub Assembly: Automotive
Of course it depends on your configuration, i.e. year, ABS, coarse or fine threads.

Ok thank you for your help. I will get that and put it on and see if it solves the problem. Why would it manly make the noise when breaking?

Braking puts more strain on the wheel and hub components. More so than coasting or accelerating.

One other thing I might recommend is to purchase new mounting studs. It's a bear to remove and the old ones, (at least it was on mine). It's worth the nominal cost at a dealership.

I replaced the axel bearing and hub assemble this weekend but it is still making the same grinding/howling noise. I also already tried replacing both the rotors and pads. Any other ideas?

Did you check the brakes on the other corners? I recently thought my front left side brake pads were grinding. Turned out to be left rear. Sounds can be deceptive in origin

I did not check the other brakes but I listened from outside the truck while someone else was driving and could hear it up front. I can also feel it in the steering wheel.

I'd check it all, u-joint etc., could even be the bearing in the front diff.

I have this exact situation. the grinding noise got way worse with the new rotor and pads installed. I'm thinking there is an inner and an out pad and I may have them reversed? The instruction sheet has the two pads labeled as inner and outer and it looks like it show One dimple in one and several on the other along the edge.
