The people they are really after are the ones with the black boxes who get all the movie and payperview channels for free, all day every day. Sometimes during a big event like a Tyson fight, the cable company will air a "commercial" that's only visible to people with those illegal descramblers, and they'll say call us with your name and address to receive your free tee shirt or some other promotion. Fines can be as high as $10,000...
If you're just getting the basic channels right now (no box?) I think there is a very small chance of anyone from the cable company making much of an effort to collar you.
Originally posted by mattsbox99 Wrong guys, he lives in an apartment building its split off of the complete building, they aren't going to be able to tell. And no I would never turn anyone in. I don't really care if you take it, they got us bent over paying over $100 a month here anyway. I am glad somebody is getting something out of it. I would use it for as long as you can get away with it, when they ask, say that you thought it came with your internet.
I am with this guy. How is the cable wired?? If you are in an appartment, does that mean there is a seperate connection on the pole for each address??
in our town the cable people are so busy they dont have time to check for cable hooked up or not, myself i wouldnt worry about it, just always have a tape in the vcr, if someone knocks on your door, hit play, then act dumb. tell them you just boiught your tv that day. only hooked it up cause you were going to call tommorow for cable . had free cable for 6 years til i got a cable modem, then the guy asked if i knew it was hooked up and i told him i just hooked it up cause he was coming over
Originally posted by Harmening I had a worker from the cable company come to my house to switch me from expanded basic to just basic cable. All he said was "if I forget to put your filter on, call me in a year and I'll install it". Obviously, he never put the filter on and I received expanded cable for free. I don't think that they really care. Just my opinion.
YEAH....ditto that for me...our cable company kept messing around all its subscribers...raising the price $3-$5 a month for several months till they ended up at $50-$55/mo for 50 channels. I finally got mad and got dish network. Kept the $5 basic cable to get my local news channels and the major networks. well then they started updating all their wiring and underground cable junk. Our house just happens to have the surrounding 8 houses worth of cable linked into a box in our back yard. the company that was contracted to work on it came out to bury the cable (it was previously strung along the top of our fences) and when he did, he took the filter off of mine. He said Man, all you get is basic..i told him about the dish and he told me he wasn't putting the filter back on ....so, we have the exact same channels on cable for free now, but we also have the dish...not really much of a help unless you in another room, but I'm not gonna call and complain either.
