Hey guys something odd has happened on my 2014 f150. This morning drove it to work there was no crack on my front windshield. Got in the truck after work and a foot long crack was there. there is no rock chip or anything that caused this, and it looks as if the crack originated at the bottom of the windshield below where the black plastic covering is.
Is it possible that the crack is from the frame placing stress upon it? I just cant figure out how the crack got there and am wondering if its a warranty item.
It would be hard to claim this as a warranty item...as they will immediately say it was caused by a rock hitting it. Are you sure nothing has hit the windshield? Anyone else drive your truck?
To get the windshield covered under warranty you would have to prove a defect in workmanship or design flaw caused the crack. So highly unlikely warranty is going to cover it. Are you sure a rock did not hit the windshield? The edges are the most susceptible to crack if a rock hits even close to the perimeter of the windshield. You may not even see a rock chip but if it hit just right, with difference in temps, the windshield could crack.
Your best bet is to call your insurance. I have free glass replacement on my insurance which has paid for itself times over.
I had this happen within a couple months of buying my 2011. Experienced some high temps that week, and the crack just appeared. You could see both ends of the crack, and it was obvious there were no chips in it. Called my dealer and they said it was possible, but they would need to see it and send pictures to Ford to prove it was not a chip. I took it to the dealer and they agreed it looked like a heat stress crack, took some pictures, sent to Ford and got approval. Only minor part of it I did not like, is it had to be replaced at the dealership. They could not send someone out to fix it, because the windshield had to go back to Ford.
At my work we were doing a large number of 1-ton chevy's back in 2010. We had one windshield crack almost all the way across. Nothing had touched it and the truck had 4 miles on it but had been on our lot for 3 months. The selling dealer did fix it as there was no damage to the truck or window to cause it. It's rare but it does happen.
dealer looked it over and said its highly unlikely that it will get replaced. Guess we will see what happens. Ya I should probably call state farm and see what my policy is.
