I have an '07 F250 with 3200 miles on it. Last night, in Colorado, temps dropped down to low 20's. I drove the truck last night, parked it, and came out this morning to find a huge rainbow shaped crack on my windshield. My immediate thoughts were the heater vents still radiated heat while the sleet cooled the windshield and - CRACK!
I called the dealer this morning that said they had received four other calls today regarding local Super Duty's with the exact same issue. The service manager I usually work with was out until Monday but the gentleman I spoke with said this wouldn't be covered under warranty and would be out of pocket.
Wouldn't this seem like a manufacturing defect?? Windshields should be able to stand up to "normal" weather conditions. There are no pits, no chips, or any other weak points that the crack originated from.
Just want to get some others thoughts before I approach the service manager and/or Ford for resolution.
Here in colorado, I ususally have a crack in my windshield before the 1st oil change. The only way it is covered is if there was a small chip in it from the fatory. That has been known to happen on RARE occasions. If it started under the trim, it could be that otherwise you just had a chip from something and the weather amplified it.
If it was from the factory you may have to prove that.
Welcome to the site Jeremy. On plowsite.com there were several people that had cracked windshileds, but they all happened while plowing snow. You might check there for more info in the ford truck forum.
on my 2004 and my 2006 i had more things hit the windshield than any other car i ever owned. the 2004 got a chip then immediatly got a crack across the the whole glass!
SD's are bad about getting cracked windshields. Had one at work do the same thing. Mine is a magnet for rocks. I just changed mine 10 months ago, and last week it got hit again. Chevy blazer this time, Olds bravada(same model) the first time.
Mine is covered also. I use Erie insurance, and it has a free glass replacement, 0 deductable , in my policy, and verbally by the agent, and Im in Illinois.
I live and work in Alberta... I'm good for at last one windshield a year, sometimes two. I don't bother with glass coverage since the premiums are rediculus. Luckily, the windshield is the cheapest piece of glass in a SD. $186.50 installed. Put my last one in last fall. Had it a month before getting the first stone hit. I was able to get to a glass shop before the crack spead too far to repair.
I had mine crack, 06, F-350 2500 miles on it, was upper drivers corner, but it cracked from the inside,,so the dealer replaced it ,,made damn sure they were putting a carlite back in it too !
I believe you have every right to expect your windshield to withstand normal weather condictions Jeremy. I would pursue the matter as high as I had to go.
Mine cracked about 6 months ago. It was parked on a hill, heard a pop and there was a crack across the top above the mirror. Some day I'll get it fixed.
I was a ford service director for 11 years, ford covers glazing (glass) for 3/36 against stress cracks. Take a ball point pen and run it along the crack, if the pen doesnt get stuck anywhere in the crack, then it wasnt hit by a rock, (chipped) and its a stress crack, they will replace it at fords expense. Hope this helps.
