starter/ flywheel probs

Hey guys, I'm dealing with a 1988 f150, the trans is a original m5r2, and the flywheel match that, but the engine is a 302 out of a 78, I cant seem to get the starter to grab, any wich way I shim or adjust it, just makes the Chevy grinding noise but wont turn the engine, I was told to put a auto starter on it to fix this issue, any input?! Thanks alot

Is the starter from the 78 motor? Or from the 88 motor? What about the flywheel?

Get a starter for the 88 year if you use the wrong starter they grind the gear should be inside the starter nose if not it just stays engaged while the motor runs
