Angry Starter granding flexplate

i have a 1984 f150, 5.8L, 4wd, automatic. the starter began to grind the flywheel so i torn it apart and replaced the flywheel and got a new starter. when i finally put it back together it still proceeded to grind. the marks on the flywheel are only on the front half of the teeth. so im thinkin that the starter is too far away. im not sure what to do. please give me some advice. thanks. jake rhoades.

Do some research on the part numbers, and make sure you have one for a auto, and not a manual tranny.

i have the sameproblem, except.......the donor truck ate a new starter, which i put a new drive into today. i have a new flywheel to install, soon. but i dont want to put it together and have the same prob. do we think someone purchased, maybe a automatic type starter by mistake and the starter and flywheel ate each other. could anything else be out of kilter? i dont have any history as to the chain of events. i got the donor because the PO (an older fellow) was having trouble removing the flywheel, and got discouraged and decided to sell.

sound like a starter speed issue to me. like the starter not spinnin quite fast enough, or beginin hard enough to work the engagement mechanism. make sure youre gettin full power to the starter.

already checked that. the starter i have is for an automatic c6 tranny. and the flexplate i have is a 164 tooth. all parts are correct. im goin to replace the silinoid.. old timers have said if its not working properly, the shaft will now engauge properly. and will also shim the starter instead of the flexplate.

You posted your issue on the wrong forum on somebody else's thread. You should try again in either your year range of truck or the appropriate diesel forum.

Are you sure you didn't swap the oil pressure lead for the temp lead?
