Cooling question

What is the difference that makes a radiator/core support super cooling as opposed to standard?

Thanks.

Usually it is the number of cores that is the difference. The more cores the better cooling. Look in the filler neck and you will see rows of fins. These are the cores. Also more cores makes the radiator wider, so be careful as that can cause fitment issues. You can also go overkill on cooling too, sometimes too much is not a good thing. The engine needs to get to operating temperature.

as far as the core support, the opening for the radiator has 2 sizes. Super cooling has a larger opening

Gotcha. This truck was originally a 6 cyl. The core support opening was only about 2/3 as wide as the radiator. I was going to enlarge it until I looked at the bottom of the support. I'll have to try to salvage the one off my wrecked truck.

Is it a fair statement that all v8 supports have the larger radiator/core support opening?

The seller of this truck referred to the engine as a 390 High Performance. It idles a little rough although the tach is steady. It has headers rather than exhaust manifolds. Is there a way to determine if the cam has been upgraded without major disassembly?

Just trying to determine what I have.

Thanks.

I believe 302s also have the smaller opening.

Super Cooling radiator support (C7TZ-16138-B) has a larger opening radius, as the Super Cooling radiator is: 26 1/4" wide x 24 1/4" high.

Non Super Cooling radiator support (C7TZ-16138-A) used with standard/xtra cooling and A/C radiators which vary from 18 7/16" wide x 18 3/8" high / 26 1/4" wide x 19 3/4" high.
