Radiator Core Support differences

Hi,

I have a question that I was hoping someone could answer for me concerning Radiator Core Supports on 67-72 trucks. I have learned from posts at this forum that there are 2 types. I will call them "Super Cool" and "everything else".

Visually, what is the difference?

I'm guessing that the Core Support for the "Super Cool" is the one with the brackets attached to the engine side of the Support that the radiator then attaches to. "Everything else" radiators have Core Supports without these brackets and their radiators bolt directly to the Core Support.

Is this correct?
Thanks,

Thanks for the info, ....but I already had this from reading every post I could find on this forum site.

Back to the question at hand.... what is the difference (visually) in the 2 supports? Or do they look identical? Or,... Do the brackets I mentioned differentiate them?

I do not know know about the brackets. I'm betting jowilker would know. But the S/C support would have a bigger hole for the taller core. I believe the hole and the bottom of the support dipps down farther.

Thanks,

I've found that your kind of right.
I have the big cooling radiator that I'm not sure what it came out of may be 1972-1976 f450- f600 and it mounts right up to the back side of the rad-support. And not to the side rails.
I've seen the supper cool rads with mounting brackets that are setup to bolt to the tall side rails.

My 71 f250 4wd truck came with an 300 I6 and the radiator support opening fits perfect from the I6 radiator to the big supper cool radiator.

I see radiator supports with the tall side rails & low side rails but can't remember now what models they were and engines. Other then a 302 engine had the smaller radiator opening..
Don't know if that helps you any. But where theirs a will there's a way to mount the big supper radiator..

Thanks to all for the replies.

I had to replace my Rad Core Support years ago. I found a Core Support from a 1969 F350 at the local salvage yard. It being understood that all 67-72 F350's came with the "Super Cool" radiator as standard equipment. I put in a 24 1/2 inch tall Super Cool radiator, bolting up to the tall brackets. Crazy thing is that the opening in the front of this Rad Core Support is only 18 1/2 inchs tall.

This made me think, ... was there also a Rad Core Support for the non-Super Cool radiators that also used the tall brackets?

From my research it appears that a Rad Core Support that has the tall brackets was a Super Cool only unit..... just wish I could confirm my theory.

With the rad support tall rails then mostly it would have to mount a supper cool rad.
The tall rail rad support look as this would mount many other radiators from outer to the inner mounts holes as they have a lot. If not then drill and mount what ever you want..

jowilker has a 1966 F100, doesn't have a '64/72 truck parts catalog. So would he be aware that there were two different 1967/72 radiator supports?

But the S/C support would have a bigger hole for the taller core. I believe the hole and the bottom of the support dips down farther.
Since the Super Cooling Radiator (SC/R) is taller than the Standard, Xtra Cooling & A/C radiators, the SC/R radiator support has a larger opening radius.

The SC/R has a HUGE top tank, it's much wider and deeper than the other radiators.

The SC/R fan shroud (C7TZ-8146-B) is also different than the Standard, Xtra Cooling & A/C fan shroud (D3TZ-8146-C [replaced C8TZ-8146-K]).

Bill, .... would you by chance know the opening radius dimensions of the 2 types of core supports?

Many thanks to all,

I just come from the PnP saw a 1968 f250 & 1976 f350.
And this what I found out for the radiator opening specs.

The 1968 f250 had the lower side rails for regular size radiator. No model listed on bed.

The f350 had the tall side rails. like the c/s have for the supper cool radiator. Model was a stake side bed.

The Radiator opening width was 27.9/19" x tall 18"FOR BOTH RADIATOR SUPPORTS
OPENING SIZES.

Now this leaves the odd ball 302 engine radiator supper rad opening the only one with the smaller radiator & smaller rad support that I have ever come across.

Just the two mounting rails for many different sizes of radiators that mount to them,
I believe is what really gets people screwed up.
When there's only two ways to mount the radiator

1. Is the outer edge mounting holes with tall side rails.
2. Or the inner face mounting holes of the support short side rails

1973/79 F100/350's use different radiator supports than 1967/72 F100/350's.

There are two for round headlamps (with/without SC/R), one for 1978/79's with rectangular headlamps.
