I'm trying to narrow down a problem with my 94F1504x4. I just put in my 3rd starter in 9 months. When I leave for work in the morning, the truck will start fine. When I get home and turn the truck off, if I try to restart it the starter will turn and turn and turn untill it starts. I have a 1 day old starter (Motorcraft), new battery, and new cables. I have a starter heat shield and JBA shorty headers, and my first starter lasted 7 years with headers. Could this be an ignition problem?
Hey there 78f3504x4! Alot of guys seem to have that problem. Even with the heat sheild, the starter is still affected by heat. As with the question about electrical. The next time you get home from work, or take a drive, you may want to hook up a voltage meter to see if there is current to the starter with the key in the off position.
A small amount of current will burn out a starter rather quickly. A mis match of battery amps and starter amps can have the same effect also. It will also effect the voltage regulator and the alternator as well. Unless there is some other piece of equipment thats constantly discharging the battery in small amounts, just enough to keep the sequence of starting, to the operation of your rig from firing up properly, is going to have you buying another starter.
See what you can come up with and get back to us.... In the meantime, anyone else have a couple of pennies?
If the starter turns and turns until it starts, it doesn't sound like a starter problem to me. More like something with ignition or fuel. Have you pulled codes, checked fuel pressure, etc.?
Try checking your cranking battery voltage to see if you are getting enough power. Corroded cables can cause starting probs because it takes extra amps to turn the engine over. Might not leave enough power for the ignition.
Does it turn over at the same speed as in the morning?
It sounds like a connection problem that rears its ugly head when the engine is warm.
Lot's of good advise guys! I was hoping to keep fuel out of it until the electronics were checked out.... Sorry about that.... We'll patiently wait for him to reply.... Talk with you guys soon!
