The bottom of the hood springs also wear into the bottom edge of the hinge and effectively reduce the tension on the springs making the hood heavy to lift. You may have to remove the springs, fill in the notch cause by spring wear and reinstall the spring. Also, give them healthy lubrication as already mentioned.
Mine has wore in a bit up top and the lower is on the third notch already. It moves very easily and isn't a binding issue....just a 500 pound hood on 56 year old springs...and this truck has been shown for the past 20 years so....some modifying will help. I'm also going to look at adding a lift support as in the newer cars if I can find the right pivot points that will do what I need and not be in your face..if I make it happen I will surely make a thread on it!!
I've considered fabbing up a pair of struts as well.......it's on my long list of things on the to-do list. Lifting the first 4-5 inches is the hardest part....then not a problem.
