Hey guys I have a question here. Locally there is a van for sale I can pick up cheap. I basically just want the engine out of it. It is a 2001. I wanted the late 99 turbo set up off of it. Also I could use the injectors as extra cores when I upgrade mine on my truck. So my question is is this worth it? Do the vans not have the same set up as the SD trucks? If not what would I be missing for the late 99 set up? Also what are the other differences on the van engine? I can get this cheap so it is definitely an option to buy.
The vans had a different turbo. The compressor side is the same. The turbine side (exhaust) is larger (1.15 A/R vs 0.84 on the truck), and the turbine wheel has a different "trim". The van also has no wastegate, and no intercooler. The exhaust outlet housing is different, and you will need a $100 adapter to use the van turbo in your truck. On its own, the van turbo will have more turbo lag, but will make a little more power once it does spool. However, with supporting additional mods (bigger injectors,WW2 etc..), its reported that the lag is not noticeable. Do a search for "van turbo", as there are numerous threads on the subject.
I'm not sure about any other engine differences, van vs truck.
Another thing that occured to me:
Vans have no intercooler, and therefor I would assume no "spider". This is one of the things you would need to change, to upgrade from e99 to 99.5-03. So, you would need to source that elsewhere (more money). So, you're basically buying the van for a turbo and the basic long block, but would still need a number of parts from another vehicle.
He has 1k on it. 300k on it. I am probably gonna buy it pull engine and scrap it. I can sell the e99 set up off mine and sell the hpop and what not. I should be able to break close to even then have an extra set of injectors for cores.
Any signs of dusting in the air intake? You can pull the engine cover off easy enough and take a look at the intake. If it starts well with no smoke and runs strong down the road I think it's worth $1K all day long. I'm seeing engines all over CL on the ground for $2k and you don't even know if they run!
