Found: E99 Van Turbo

Was searching through the classifieds and found an early 99 van turbo up for sale. Figured I'd post up here to let the e99 guys know since those things are as rare as hens teeth.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...nd-spider.html

And because I know the question will be coming:

The difference between stock and a van turbo is a van turbo uses a 1.15 exhaust housing and has no waste gate. It is a little laggier on the bottom but pulls forever on the top end.

I'm on it. Thanks. Is this a really good deal for that turbo? I haven't researched the van turbo's too much but it sounds like they are worth the switch. I have decided that I am not going to do the early to late conversion so it is either one of these Van turbo's or a D66.

I run a van turbo on my truck and I like it. Great intermediate step between stock and a 38r.

I just about ordered a van turbo 1/12 years ago with all the bells and whistles from Clay when I stumbled across my 38R deal, a very nice upgrade indeed, nice find Pete.

Stock tune will be nearly worthless on stock injectors, so be ready for that. Since the exh housing is so much larger, it takes more fuel to get it spooled, which is the lag folks talk about. With tuning and/or larger stix, it's really not an issue. Mine is still doing well producing 35ish psi with about a 1:1 exhaust back pressure to boost pressure ratio, which is what you want. I think it's a good mod...

EDIT: $350 is about right. I spent about that on mine after rebuilding it...

Don't forget to take elevation in to account. I was thinking of going with a van turbo, but if people at sea level are talking about lag, then throw an extra 5 - 8,000 feet in there and you may be hating it with the way the air thins out. If you tow much and/or heavy, you might want to go with a D66 or keep an eye out for a complete 99.5+ setup.

I drive my truck in stock tune often and it isn't that bad. You have to remember its still smaller than the late model turbos.

The $350 price includes the van exhaust adaptor

So there will definitely be a difference huh? Basically, is the little bit of lag worth the extra on the top end? My truck spools up so ridiculously fast right now, but I've never had the pleasure of driving a 7.3 with a turbo that really stays in it on the top end. From what I hear, the E99 (not van) turbo spools fast but tops out too quick.

Ya, I would do the 38r, but with the price of the early/late conversion + the turbo, its out of my price range.

Well I do have stock stix. Hopefully that will change to stage II single shots soon (will this turbo work well with them?), but I am not running a stock tune. I have superchips and run it on performance. DP will happen when summer rolls around again. So with the superchips (for now) and stock sticks with this new turbo, it will be a big upgrade huh?

Well I will be in WA for the most part, then who knows where I will go with work, so higher elevation is possible. But I'll be staying in the northwest. I do not to a lot of towing.

Jim said that this turbo is basically an unmodified D66. What is the difference between this and the D66? I would like to do the early/late conversion but that plus a turbo is some serious $$$.

What do you mean by "isn't that bad". How is the lag? comparing stock tune with E99 turbo and E99 Van turbo, which is better? Would you do a flat $350 ?

Bryce my stock tune with van turbo is no more laggy than a stock 99.5
That superchips will help a little but a dp will put u over 300 hp on stock sticks

Hmmm. Well I haven't actually driven a 99.5 so I cant really compare those two. I want to know how my E99 turbo will compare to the van turbo. Basically, does the better top end of that turbo outweight the speed that my current turbo spools up?

On the bottom end it will take a second longer to spool but the top end is a very noticeable gain.it will pull much longer and harder than ur stock turbo

Well thats good. The top end is where all the fun is anyways. I'm sure down the road when I get injectors is when I will REALLY feel it.

if you have a chip, there really isn't that much lag with a van turbo IMO, without the chip there is though.

Ok good. Ya, I was reading a thread that you posted where you were talking about the van turbo and said that. It made me feel better. My throttle response is excellent with the superchips so I dont think I will be upset with the trade off for a little low end to get a lot of high end. Thanks glenn
