Van turbo Question

Might be able to get one cheap, how much of an upgrade is it over a stock turbo? What kinda boost numbers does the van turbo make or can handle on a truck? I know the van turbo is non waist gated with a bigger turbine, does it make the truck real laggy with it? Thanks.

The van does not have an intercooler. I have a 2000 E350 7.3 and a 2000 Excursion 7.3 PSD. The van version doesn't develop as much power but is still adequate for towing.

But, as I understand it, the van turbo is bigger to overcome the lack of an intercooler. Put the van turbo on a truck with an intercooler and you're upgrading. Lot of guys on here are running the van turbo in their trucks and excursions.

I have a 1.15 van turbo with an ATS ported intake housing, stock compressor wheel and a Spearco intercooler. With the right amount of fuel the van turbo will support up to 400rwhp nicely. Its a no brainer if you can get the turbo cheap.

Its very laggy for stock injectors, it will flow alot of exhaust flow though while keeping the drive pressures down. Thats the tradeoff. Good for towing, and Very nice exhaust choice for 200ccish injectors.

I ran one, with stock injectors and once i had enough of that i went to a .84 Turbonetics.

Ditto what Chris & Kris said above. I've had mine on for almost 2 years now and towed our 31' 5th wheel with it cross country a few times. A little laggy (not much in my opinion) when you first punch it hard but once she lites it is up to 25 psi very fast. I ussually max out around 27 psi. Definite improvement over stock - you will notice the difference. I have the DIIC intercooler and gutted the EBPV, EGT's have been fine as well. I have the WW, but the stock wheel is a better choice, will push more air.

I've seen at least 35 psi out of my van turbo, but that's with B Code injectors too. Max on stock injectors was ~27psi. The turbo is less laggy on the higher chip settings.

You shouldn't have any surge problems with a van turbo. I can't recall but maybe one case where I've heard of a van turbo surging. If it did, the ATS housing is the way to go. I'd try it without the ATS first though. I have one on mine, but I had it before I got the van turbo and just transferred it over.

For the $ (especially if you can find one cheap), the van turbo is a great upgrade. Costs a heck of alot less than other turbo upgrades. Don't worry too much about the lag, it is not as pronounced as you might think. The only thing I would change on mine is to put the stock wheel back on.

Your choice...if you like more whistle get the WW. The stock wheel will flow a little more air with a little less whistle. If your not going to get the ATS housing then I say go with the WW.

Like Chris said.

I did the WW because at the time there was a backorder on the ATS housings and I needed the truck ready to pull the camper to Colorado. I like the whistle .

Having said that, if I did it again I would go with the ATS housing and the stock wheel if the $400 is available for the ATS housing.
