Originally put this in the towing forum and wanted to put it here to see what I could get for information to prepare this thing for quite possibly one of the longest towing jobs it has performed in its life.
So i now have a 1995 F150 XL with the 300 I6 and E4OD pushing 170k miles on the odo. she runs good. have replaced:
plugs
wires
cap/rotor
valve cover gasket
oil pan gasket
motor mounts
Things I have parts for and will be changing this weekend:
transmission mount
brakes
wheel bearings
rotors
Is there anything else i should be looking for? The E4OD has a significant leak coming from the torque converter cover but man i just dont want to mess with it and lose my transmission halfway through the haul. I am towing 1500 miles and have never towed this distance with such an older vehicle. Really worried about going through the mountains especially. It will be pulling no more than 4000 lbs not including its own weight. This move is last second and just purchased this truck back in April. Any advice would be appreciated. This will be a one time deal. Here are some pictures of the E4OD:
I have that same truck 1995 ford 300 six auto. In 2008 Took my first trip with it 250 miles to a friends. Had truck less than a week. Get there trans leaking from torque converter cover, While running one drip every 5 seconds lost 2 quarts not pints QUARTS !! What to do ?? Went to auto parts store bought 6 quarts of tranny fliud. Put 2 in and headed home, checking fliud every 50 miles. Made it home using just under 3 quarts.Tell My friend ford mechanic. He knows right a way FRONT PUMP SEAL GOING BAD !!!
I had to tell you that story because I think your going down the same path I did. I have 3 choices here stop check trans every 50 miles hoping it don't fail,, Or put the seal in. Theres trans sealers like lucas and others but I didn,t know much about them.
To end this boring story !! 2015 I have put 150,000 on that trans.with only 1 oil change nothing else.and still shifts great with 280,000 on trans.
Putting the seal in paid off big time. I know that's the problem with yours,Heard about this many times.
Sorry for the bad news, but now you know. Good luck with the move !!
My advice would be to get your front pump seal fixed....before the trip. I recently had mine repaired but wouldnt hesitate to do it again.
The transmission is a vital component to the truck that you are expecting to work correctly for the duration of 1500 miles of harder than average use. What you dont pay upfront to have it fixed, tack on 2 more days to your trip, a tow bill....plus you'll be fixing that leak when your truck says so.
Its a chunk of change but have them do the seal, fluid and filter change in one shot. Its well worth the money.
How much did all that run you guys? Local shops here are pricing it at about $500 thats even if i bring the transmission to them. This short notice move is definately requiring me to save all the money I can. If that means parting ways with this truck to pay for a uhaul. That is what it means. Finally got a 300 i6 and now i may have to get rid of her. I love this damn engine.
If you can pull the trans yourself , you can install the seal yourself . Some fluids , a days work , and a $10 seal . Like changing a front crank seal , not too hard .
Mine was about $900 start to finish including the filter and service.
I would seriously consider just biting the bullet and getting it fixed (yourself or a shop).
The fees for a one way trip uhaul could easily run half of what the repair would be. And as mentioned, once done, the pump seal should be good for years.

Clarkbre I see you are from WA. I will be moving to OR. If i got this seal replaced do you think this vehicle would be more than capable of pulling around 4000 lbs through those mountains? if i need to part ways i will. Given my situation i have no room for error.
You wouldn't have any issue pulling 4000lbs if everything is in good working order. Getting that tranny leak fixed will be best for you and the vehicle. Anything you can do to ease some mental stress when driving/towing is worth spending the money on. If you don't have a tranny cooler and brake controller already, consider installing those as well for added peace of mind. As for the truck being able to handle the weight? Piece of cake for a 300/6.
Depending on your financial situation, perhaps it would be an option to rent a cube van and auto hauler? Your 4k# of goods in the van body and truck on the trailer... This way you can travel in peace knowing that your truck won't poop the bed on you, and fix it when time and money permits down the road...Good Luck!!

Definitely looking at the transmission cooler for sure. Read that everywhere should be upgraded. I definitely am not thinking it is the front pump seal now with further inspection. Really hard to tell considering it has been bathing in oil from the leaky engine oil pan gasket. But when i stick my finger in the dust cover of the torque converter drain bolt, it isn't red like ATF. It is black grime and oily. The transmission pan is more likely in my opinion now. the shift linkage has bright red ATF on it as well as the rear of the transmission. She shift fine and no slippage either.
Took the truck to a transmission shop and they said front pump seal is fine. However, my trans pan is shot and bent to hell/warped. They recommended I replace it.
