1999 F250 glow plugs

Hey guys, the other day I went out to start my pickup and it was 61 degrees and it didn't want to start to well, the starter was weak so I bought a starter, and fuel filter for it, I just bought the pickup and it has almost 300,000 miles, when I put the fuel filter in I saw the glow plug wires were unhooked from the solenoid and taped up, I know there was a reason for this, the pickup has a 6 position chip, would this burn the glow plugs out? or if the wiring harness melts could it short out and cause someone to unhook the wires? just wanted to ask some questions before hooking them back up to see if anything happens, also if I have to replace glow plugs can a guy check compression through the glow plug hole? Thanks

chip will not burn the glow plugs out. Are you sure you are looking at the Glow plug relay? Some folks will remove the air intake heater relay that is closest to the front and then tape up the wires. More common if you have a boost gauge as the air intake heater is usually removed and replaced with a different fitting that feeds the boost gauge.

ok, no I do not have a boost gauge but would like one, and there is only one relay above the intake valley, I thought there should be two but I haven't found another one. the glow plug light does come on when the key is turned on, but looks like to me they are disconnected. Thanks guys

E99 trucks only have one glow plug relay. You probably don't have an intake heater. It would plug into the left side of the "Y" pipe.

Also 2nd that you use the glow plug hole for compression. Pretty easy to do yourself if you have a diesel compression tester.

the glow plug light in the dash will come on whether they are working or not. it is an idiot light to tell you to wait to start.

i hook a LED to the output of the glow plug relay. this way i know the glow plugs are lit. and they will stay powered for up to 2 1/2 minutes when really cold, not for the 30 seconds the dash light is on.
