I have a 95 F-150 w/302 auto. My AC compressor sometimes comes on and sometimes does not. It is fully charged with no leaks and when it is running the temp at the vent is 38 degrees I'm thinking abiut putting some ice trays out and making ice. Where do I start to look for this intermitent problem? As always you guys are the best and I know that I'll get some good answers. So in advance thanks a lot!!!!!!
Check the connector at the compressor for looseness. If it is, tighten the connector with small flat blade screwdriver inserted between the plastic and the metal and flatten the metal part slightly to make a better connection. check for corroded connections.
If that does not solve it, you will have to take the dash apart and test the AC switch in the dash with a OHM meter, making sure that the switch has a positive connection when the button is pushed.
If that does not solve it, you may have a AC clutch that is about ready to go out. (shorting inside or electro magnet clutch shoes not fully engaging) I think the first two are the most likely.
You don't have to pull the dash to diagnose the compressor - either the clutch is getting power, or it's not. If it's not, trace the circuit to find out why it's losing power. If it is, but it's not engaging, replace the clutch.
If the compressor cycles, you may have moisture in the system. This can give normal pressure readings but cause the low pressure switch to cut power to the compressor.
Was this just refilled? If so the system wasn't properly vacuumed down. (this removes the moisture)
If it wasn't refilled recently please ignore my rambling.
