I am having fits with this one, I have a 96 aerostar awd ext with a 4.0 liter. Because it is a 96 it has the obd 2 system on it, (can't use a multimeter or the check engine light to read the codes) I took it to have it scanned and here is what I came up with. I have a code p1443, (evap control valve) and a p0171 (left bank lean) My check engine light is on, but I haven't noticed any surging or loss of power. My questions are: 1) Since this is a fuel injected engine, would it even have a control valve? 2) I know that earlier 4.0 liter engines had problems with intake manifold bolts working loose. Were these ever really corrected in later builds? Any insights here would be much appreciated.
1. Yes. Even though there's no carburetor, the fuel tank is vented through the charcoal cannister to prevent excess pressure or vacuum in the fuel tank.
2. I can't say for sure, but just being logical and knowing how the auto industry is, I doubt anything was done. A fix would have required either locking bolts of some sort (or thread locker to be applied to the bolt) and a gasket that didn't compress over time. This would have probably added 15 cents to the cost to produce it, so it wouldn't have been done. A few pennies in the price will make or break a deal.
Thanks much Mikeman. I found the vapor cannister, though it is nowhere near where the underhood sticker said it would be, it's on the opposite side. Might as well start simple and check the vacuum line and see where it leads.
