My truck was starting hard....found some diesel leaks , repaired them now I notice that the glow relay is not coming on until I turn the key on once for about 6 seconds then turn the key off....then turn the key back on and the relay starts cycling on-off like its supposed to...why would I need to turn the key on twice???
I should say that I've already changed the glow plug wiring harness, the eng. temp.switch thinking that these may have been the culprits as to why the relay wasn't cycling ....tnx for the help
Don't know why the relay seems to need a little foreplay on your truck, but on "another" forum, they STRONLY recommend getting rid of the relay and going to a manual pushbutton. The problem with the controller failing is that it can only fail two ways, it either fails OFF or it fails ON, and I guess if it fails ON, then it damages the glow plugs and can even cause you to burn a tip off, which then can cause further engine damage if it makes it out of the little precombustion chamber.
Lots of info over there on it. I'm going to change mine out when I make it that far down the list...
Check for a loose or bad ground on the controller. I have had this before and it was the black wire on the controller that normally grounds to one of the mounting bolts for the controller.
Lob,
we normally recommend this on the older 6.9 glow plug controllers, the newer solid state ones on the 7.3's are pretty good and don't fail too often. Normally it turns out to be a ground or connection problem with them.
I've had 3 controllers fail in 13 years every time it cooked the glow plugs
put never have i lost the tip on one. Last week i put on a push button
manual control and it worked great!! Wish i had known about it 13 yers ago.
